Although we are not a Broadway musical, full of young people dancing and singing, anticipating the coming of summer, we are just as glad as they are that it is here. June brings warm days and evenings when we can sit on our patios with our friends and share a glass of wine or two. The streets are full of friends and neighbors taking walks and stopping by to chat for a while. June is when the grandkids get out of school and come for a visit, brightening up our lives with their energy and inquisitive minds. The community also comes alive with its summer activities. Dances under the Stars, Nine & Dine golf days, and Veranda Ice Cream Socials are just a few of the events that liven up our summers and keep us on the go. Add the special district golf tournaments, bocce ball, paddle and pickle ball, tennis, water volleyball, and a host of other things and you can see why summer just flies by. June is busting out all over, and that is why we are truly an Active Over 55 Community. About 24 years ago some of our residents decided that merely celebrating the beginning of summer personally was not enough. They felt that they wanted to do more. They decided that for one week in June their personal pleasures could take a back seat to the needs of the surrounding community. This feeling of a need to do more led to the birth of the Sun Lakes Country Club Charitable Trust. The Trust is a completely separate corporation. It has its own officers and the HOA and/ or Master Board have nothing to do with its operation. Since its formation many people have participated in formulating and putting on the annual event. Over the years it has changed in format and grown in its offerings and participation. However, through all of the changes in personnel and format one thing has remained constant. It is the Trust's goal of supporting local charities. That goal is on-going. Over the history of Charity Week, local charities have received over one million dollars in assistance from the trust. Many of the recipients could not exist without the Trust's help, and that is why it is important that we continue to support Charity Week. This year it will be the week of June 16 through the 22, and will have something for everyone. It starts on Monday and runs through Sunday with different and fun events daily. The entire community is invited to come to the free fireworks show Friday night and to the Ballroom Sunday afternoon for the live auction and to witness the drawing for the grand raffle prizes. This year there are three: 1st is $1,500, 2nd is $1,000, and 3rd is $500. I highly recommend that you attend at least some of the events. You will enjoy yourself and be a part of helping us help organizations that assist the less fortunate in the Pass Area. Correction: In my May article I wrote that the CC&R amendments failed to get the necessary number of votes to pass. My statement was based on the results given to me by our independent inspector of elections immediately after they had processed the votes. They reviewed their reporting method and discovered they had erred in their initial determination. First, it did not take 66 percent "yes" votes to pass it required 75 percent approval. Secondly, these votes should have been extrapolated in a similar fashion as the votes for the Master Board candidates. The day of the election they only provided the raw count results. Once their error was discovered the Inspector of Elections reevaluated the count and determined that the amendment actually did pass by 11 votes. Remember that no one from Sun Lakes, other than the District Delegates on election day, or PCM ever handles any of the ballots. The Inspector of Elections receives the ballots, oversees the Delegate review, runs the ballots through their machines, verifies the count, and reports the results. Once the results are reported the Inspector of Elections puts all the ballots in sealed boxes and takes them to their office for safe keeping. This is all done in accordance with established Civil Code. I apologize for last month's error, and I hope this explanation clears up any confusion it may have caused.
