"Keep on Moving," a recent article in the Press Enterprise, states, "Conquer the inactivity battle… Join a local exercise class… It's important to remember being active doesn't have to mean completing a total body workout. Anything that gets you up and moving can significantly add to your health and fitness as you age." "Moving" is what we do. The class consists of six different Leslie Sansone "Walk Fit" DVDs. The easy-to-follow routines are set to music with varied tempo. No memorization of routines is required. Three of the DVDs incorporate resistance bands. Tailor the class to your own needs. The full one hour class is a four mile walk. Leave early or arrive later to shorten your walk. If you can't make it three days a week, that's okay too. Men and women welcome. We are free! Join us Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 7:45 to 8:45 am in the Lodge Ballroom. PLEASE NOTE: The additional class to be added beginning in June will be Thursdays at 7 pm in the Aerobics Room in the Fitness Center. For more information contact Karen Tuvim at (951) 599- 4236 or Kay Masonbrink at (951) 223-3047. "Walk-Fit" Exercise Club reVersAl oF Aging One unfortunate aspect of aging is the loss of muscle tissue and strength, but it is possible to slow down the aging process by improving strength. A 2011 study published in the journal Sports Medicine examined the effects of strength training on aging muscles. It found that strength training increased insulin sensitivity and reduced pain and inflammation from arthritis. The researchers noticed that the effects of aging were reversed! Better BrAin A group of women aged 65-75 participated in resistance and balance training classes in one 2010 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. These women not only improved their lower body power but also improved their selective attention and conflict resolution abilities. As I reported in a previous column, a contracting muscle has a positive influence on other organs. www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health- advisor/you-dont-have-to-give-in-to-aging-how-strength- training-can-make-you-younger/article18225042/ The SASY routine encompasses twelve chair exercises to strengthen arms, legs, and torso. All are very simple. SASY is a lot of fun, very social and free! We think this is why it works! Jump into strength training — we look forward to seeing you.
