As we celebrate our 96th annual Cherry Festival, we can look back with great pride to the city that we've become. In the early days of the festival, about 500 townsfolk arrived in horse-drawn buggies and wagons, pulled out baskets filled with homemade foods, and thrilled to Mr. Tillery's soft-shoe tap dance routine. Over the decades, much has changed. This year's Cherry Festival, which debuts June 5, will attract enough people to fill a good-sized city of 40,000 people. They will see carnival lights and throw their heads back on thrill rides. Cheating Daylight, Brenton Wood and the Latin Legends, Tierra, Malo, Thee Midniters, and the Lowrider Band, will blast out their hits carried through big speakers stacked on an outdoor stage. A parade and the legendary cherries that gave the festival its name will draw tens of thousands of people again this year. music in the park Each summer, fans in Beaumont eagerly await our very own local music festival. The concerts, which begin on the 4th of July, draw about 90,000 people to the city and give a big boost to the local economy. For many, it's a great opportunity to see the musical acts they grew up with and loved. It also gives moms and dads a chance to introduce their favorite music to their kids. Now in its seventh year, the Summer Concert Series has showcased a Who's Who of rock 'n' roll, including Air Supply, America, War, Michael McDonald, LeAnn Rimes, Three Dog Night, The Commodores, Rick Springfield, and Pat Benatar, among others. This year's line up is on page 8. Stewart Park has truly become a great venue where you can listen and dance to the hits of yesterday and make new musical memories that will last a lifetime! market night As a special added attraction, the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce will present "Market Night" starting at 4 pm during the Summer Concert Series. If you're hungry for hamburgers, hot dogs, fresh produce, funnel cakes and many more delicious treats, you'll love Market Night! Booths along 10th Street will offer food and merchandise, along with a Bounce House for kids. fun in the summer
