10 OUR YUCAIPA | JUNE 2014 OUR YUCAIPA | JUNE 2014 11 Help create a world with more birthdays! Yucaipa will hold their Relay for Life, dedicated to Sarah Amento, at Yucaipa Community Park on June 28 and 29, from 9 am to 9 am. Relay For Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society. Please join the quest for a cure today by volunteering or forming a team. We are looking for committee members to help with corporate sponsorship, entertainment, registration/accounting, survivorship, public relations, on-site volunteers, on-site survivor activities, and food. We also need volunteers who will help on the day of the event. Relay For Life helps celebrate cancer survivors and remembers those who have lost the battle. Cancer survivors kick the Relay off with an honorary lap. Survivors and those who are no longer with us can be remembered in a one-of-a-kind ceremony where paper bags bearing the names of loved ones line the track. A candle is placed inside and lit in the evening on Saturday the 28th. This memorable portion of the event is often the most powerful time of the activity. You can purchase a luminaria bag for $10. You are invited to gather 8 to 15 of your favorite people and form a team while having fun and making a difference. You can sign up on line at Relayforlife.org/YucaipaCA. "Not a door I knocked on, not a person I asked for help said no," she said. "This has been truly divine. It's this city, it's the people. Everyone showed up." She continued, "When I was about 12 years old, my father gave me a framed quote. This is what it read, 'To travel through life spreading love, gratitude, and compassion are the keys to success… you already know how to open the lock.' It was this day, May 17th, 2014 that I saw the cities of Yucaipa, Calimesa, and Redlands 'open the lock.' "To travel the streets with Susan Najera, my sounding board for many issues, was absolutely incredible. We laughed, giggled, and shed many tears. But the absolute best part was seeing all the love in each person in our town. Knowing if they were volunteering at the car wash or lemonade stand, holding an event around town, or donating 50¢ to $1,000, each of them were threaded together with love and compassion for Sarah. Let us not forget this day, and I pray the children will remember how important they were to making this day possible!"
