The Myrtha stainless steel pool was designed in Italy and constructed and used for the 2004 Olympic swim trials held in Long Beach, CA in July of that year. The pool boasts a spacious interior that includes eight long course lanes and 19 short course lanes which are maintained at a comfortable 80 degrees year round. The qualifiers from the Olympic swim trials competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics in August. The USA Men's Swim Team won Gold in the 4x200 Freestyle Relay and the 4x100 Medley Relay, while the USA Women's Swim Team garnered the Gold in the 4x200 Freestyle Relay. Medalists in individual events that year included: Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker, Gary Hall, Jr., Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard, Natalie Coughlin, and Kaitlin Sandeno. All of them swam in the very pool now at Crafton Hills College! Joining us for this special celebration will be 2004 Olympians Mark Gangloff, who won Gold as a 4x100 Medley Relay member, and Kara Lynn Joyce, who won two silver medals on the 4x100 Medley Relay and 4x100 Freestyle Relay teams. How did Crafton Hills College come to obtain the pool? It became apparent many years ago that the City of Yucaipa had outgrown its 7th Street pool facility, a six lane "L" shaped short course pool with a deep end. The 7th Street facility was used for summer community programs, Yucaipa Aquatics (swim team, masters, and water polo) and Yucaipa High School PE and athletics (swim and water polo). With the realization that the community had outgrown its current pool, the endeavor to bring a 50 meter pool to Yucaipa began. At that time Yucaipa High School seemed to be the best option for the location of the proposed pool, however, with differences in opinion between the school and the city regarding sizing of the pool, the city explored other pool locations. Crafton Hills College was the perfect alternative as the college did not have a pool and they would be able to utilize it for academic classes when city programs were not using the pool. In the summer of 2004, when the Olympic Trials were held in Long Beach, representatives from the city of Yucaipa inquired if the pool would be available for sale after the trials were over, and negotiated with Myrtha to purchase the pool. During the next couple of years, the City worked on an agreement with the San Bernardino Community College District to have the pool placed at Crafton. The city gave the pool and related equipment to Crafton Hills College as part of the agreement. Construction of the Crafton Hills Aquatic Center began in 2008 and in October of 2010, the center opened.
