Kudos to our May dance king Marvin Friedman and Queen Jean Burridge. They looked very regal with their respective crowns strolling around the dance floor to Pomp and Circumstance and then continuing with a "slide" between rows of dancers. But, now, coming up is our USO Canteen Night; hurrah for the red, white and blue. Come one, come all and share your evening with soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, very pretty dance partners and, perhaps, even General MacArthur may make an appearance. The Big Band is ready with the 40s music and, of course, some 50s and 60s numbers for our listening and dancing pleasure. Line dancers are also included in their repertoire and a rousing rendition of YMCA. Have you ever done "Rookie Tookie?" What a blast that is! The Big Band dance is Thurs., July 24, doors open at 5:30 pm and music starts at 6 pm. Sign ups are Wed., July 16, from 1 to 3 pm – table selection at 1:15 pm in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. Dance price: $10 pp, BBDC members; $15 pp guests. Checks only, please. There will be bar service and hors d'oeuvre menus on the tables for purchase. Bring check to early sign up or mail or drop off at 1298 Green Island St. 2014 Schedule: Thurs., Sept. 4 and Thurs., Nov. 6. Volunteers still needed for our 2015 Board and committees. Info., Sheila, 845-0484 or Ted, 845-0359. 14 | sun lakes lIfestyles | July 2014 | CommIttees & news soCIal Clubs & groups | sun lakes lIfestyles | July 2014 | 15 There are no scheduled Country Western functions in July, but we are getting ready for a new season starting with our August dance. To all Sun Lakes residents, if you think you might have an interest in learning about the activities of the Country Western Dance Club, we will have a FREE introductory dance in August. No charge and no obligation. This introductory dance gives you an opportunity to learn about our club. We will teach one or two very basic line dances and a basic couples dance. So, come learn a dance if you want or just come and watch if you prefer. This August dance will also be an opportunity for our more experienced dancers to try to remember what they've learned and to demonstrate some of our favorite dances. Our introductory dance will be Fri., Aug. 22, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Our dance club is truly unique because we have activities for everyone, both singles and couples. Come and learn a dance, have a good time and meet some new friends. During the year our club gives instructions for both line dancing and couples dances as well as having our open dances on Friday nights in the Ballroom. In September, we will restart our instructions for line dances and couples with basic beginner dances, so don't be shy, come and give it a try. Check the Lifestyles for future Country Western times and places. Have questions or want information? Call Joe or Jean at 769-9148. We hope that each of you has completed last month's challenge by visiting one of the three libraries in order to locate one of the Library Volunteers and thank them for their hard work. If you would like to be a part of the volunteer group, please contact Jill Falat at 797-3263. Thanks for being a volunteer! The next Book Fair is Fri., July 4, from 10 am to 2 pm in the Main Clubhouse Library. The Book Sale will be a part of the overall holiday celebrations of Independence Day at Sun Lakes and we invite each of you to take a few minutes to browse through and buy as many of the books as possible. When you buy a book please be sure to ask for your free cookie! Grandchildren often visit us in our homes and sometimes it's difficult to keep them occupied and busy. The Library Staff has a suggestion: Take a short trip over to the North Clubhouse Library and checkout the variety of children's books, videos ,and puzzles. These books are located inside one of the labeled pullout drawers found in the back of the room. We think you will be pleasantly surprised. FYI: The North Clubhouse continues to house puzzle boxes of all types and sizes. Please take a couple of them home and have a relaxing time completing a beautiful picture of Mother Nature and other beautiful places. When completing a puzzle, if you find that it has missing pieces, please dispose of the entire puzzle box rather that returning it to the North Clubhouse Library. Also, the North Clubhouse Library continues to house a fairly large selection of non-fiction books for those of you who "strictly want the facts and nothing but the facts!" If you have any extra books that you would like to donate to the Library, please drop them off at one of the collection boxes located in each of the libraries. If you have any questions, contact either Peggy Inman at 845-8609 or Russ Anderson at 845-9414. Remember: Books being donated should be published in the year 2004 or later due to limited space being available on the shelves. Happy reading and we hope to see each of you browsing for your favorite books at one of the libraries located throughout Sun Lakes. Library Committee Restaurant & Lounge Committee Delightful Dining… Good news! Groups who wish to utilize the Lobby Bar can now do so. You will need to make a $200 deposit against a minimum income for that bar. If you are interested in arranging to use the bar, contact the Banquet Coordinator, Debbie Sorrow, at 769-6646. In the next couple of weeks the restaurant will be showcasing the fabulous desserts prepared by our most excellent pastry chef. Look for a display of the various offerings on or near the reception desk. We are in the initial planning for Oktoberfest. You will have a wonderful time sampling tasty sausages and a variety of beers all the sound of an Oompa Band. We will also offer other drink selections for the non-beer drinkers among us.
