soCIal Clubs & Groups | sun lakes lIfestyles | auGust 2014 |23 Hope everyone is enjoying the summer months and that you're keeping cool. Our next meeting and caregivers support group will be Thurs., Aug. 21 at 10 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. Our guest speaker will be Terri Howell, an outreach specialist from California Phones. Terri will explains the California telephone access program and demonstrates how to use the equipment. If you or a loved one are having trouble using a standard phone, these phones are designed for your specific needs, and you are eligible for free phones. This is one speaker you don't want to miss. Our caregivers support group begins immediately after Terri. We are blessed to have Diane Stone and Larry Liebers leading this group. Take advantage of all we have to offer. You might even make a few new friends. Our Arts and Craft group is designed to give the caregiver have the freedom to attend the meeting and support group and not have to worry about their loved one being left home alone. Just drop them off at the Arts and Craft Room on your way to the meeting. We play games, take walks, and sometimes we just sit and visit and listen to what's on their mind. We usually have entertainment and exercise. Shelly Braatz helps with light Tai Chi. Our volunteers are loving, caring and experienced in being around people with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Stop by and check us out. We are here to help. Call me, Anne, at 845-8700, if you'd like to know more about our group or have a talent you'd like to share with us. If you have questions or would like to learn more about memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, we have reading material we can share with you. Call Shirley at 845-2008. It may be hard to know the difference between age-related changes and the first signs of Alzheimer's disease. To help identify problems early, the Alzheimer's Association has created a list of 10 warning signs for Alzheimer's and other dementias. Individuals may experience one or more of these in different degrees. This month we give you the first sign. Memory Care Group (Formerly Alzheimer's & Dementia Helpers) Know the signs #1: Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer's, especially in the early stages is forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events, asking for the same information over and over and increasingly needing to rely on memory aids (e.g. reminder notes on electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own. We meet January through October, typically on the second Wednesday of the month, 11 am - 12:30 pm in the Main Clubhouse Bus Room. There are discussions on the latest findings and research, medications, nutrition, exercise, and coping skills brought to us by various speakers. Come to our group to learn and share your experience with others. Info., Gerri Piechowski, 769-2305. Parkinson's Support The Follies Oct. 2, 3, 4, 5. Ticket sales begin Sept. 20.
