38 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2014 | SPORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Racquet Club Ping Pong Club Our club joined many other clubs over the 4th of July and held a tournament to celebrate this very unique and special American holiday. We played a five team double elimination tournament that included as participants Alan Chan, Barry Pope, Ben Wang, Benjamin Oh, John Hernandez, Niles Sundstrom, Paco Paez, Rony Tordesillas and Hailu Kinde. The battle for the trophies came right down to the wire as Barry and Alan battled back from two down in the final match to tie the score at 2 to 2. With everything on the line, Paco and Ben won game three and the tournament. We would love to have you join us as we play ping pong six days a week. You can find us in the Aerobics Room Monday through Friday at 10:30 am and Saturday at 11 am. Please contact Niles Sundstrom at (951) 572-5119 or Alan Chan at (951) 769-4202 if you have any questions or need more information. ~ Niles Sundstrom Red, Blue, Padoo, and Richard, too. We had a crackling Fourth of July competition between the Red and the Blue teams captained for the third straight year by Irve Sturner and Howard Lyon. The competition was fierce and the results were as confusing as a Florida election. Once the scorekeeper got his abacus fixed, it was determined that Blue was the winner over Red by 68 to 60 games won. Members of the Blue team were Irve, as the captain, Ledia Hunter, Tina Soeten, Victor Flores, Richard Carrasco, Barbara Miller, Marty Key and Steve Hovey. The vanquished Red team included captain Howard and Louise Lyon, Larry Martin, Padoo Peralta, Romy Villena, Jocelyn Green, Howard Levine and Loren DuChesne. For the women, Padoo had the highest number of games won with 14, followed by Jocelyn with 13. On the men's side, Richard got the trophy for the most wins with 13, and Irve had 11. Cheering on all the players were Howard and Mickey Nelson who gave out grab-bag prizes to the match winners and candy as a consolation to the losers. The much coveted prizes ranged from a brand new deck of playing cards, a pair of one-size fits nobody flip-flops, a manly roll of duct tape, and a three-inch tall flamingo. Earlier, we held our annual Wimbledon Play Day, with a full morning of social tennis and a hosted luncheon in the Card Room, where participants watched some of the early round matches played at Wimbledon. Along with the traditional strawberries and cream, members and guests enjoyed a catered lunch from Dickies, the new BBQ restaurant in Beaumont. Barbara Miller did a great job with the lunch arrangements. The tender brisket, pulled pork and all the fixings completed a fun day of tennis playing and watching, and obscure Wimbledon trivia. And we were regaled with stories from Howard Nelson about getting involved in senior sports competitions and events outside the gates of Four Seasons. But it's scary out there! Not so scary, though, was Sun Lakes' annual Charity Week. Though not a FSBRC event, a group of club members participated in the tennis portion of the fundraising activities, and helped raise money for local charities. The FSBRC is very active and members get a lot for their $20 annual dues. Join us. Check out the website at www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steven Hovey Paco Paez and Ben Wang received their trophies in the Ballroom at the awards presentation. This was the second tournament win for Ben and the first for Paco. In the center, Barry Pope and Alan Chan hold their award certificates while the winners Paco Paez (L) and Ben Wang (R) wait until the awards presentations to get their trophies.
