9 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | August 2014 | We Need Your Help For Homeless Vets donAtions needed For hygiene Kits: The Blue Thong Society chapter here at Four Seasons Hemet is part of an international women's social and philanthropic organization. Our chapter has been supporting the Community Food Pantry in Hemet for over four years. We have also helped underprivileged families prepare their children for school by purchasing backpacks for children of grades K-12 and stocking them with necessary supplies for the school year. Another project we have undertaken is the creation of hygiene kits for distribution through the Community Pantry to homeless persons. Our Chapter has offered to assist John Baranek with his current efforts to provide assistance to homeless military veterans, currently housed in barracks at March Air Reserve Base. These individuals are only provided a place to sleep and food is prepared for them. What is not supplied are basic hygiene items. Our goal is to assemble at least 100 hygiene kits which will be distributed to these homeless veterans. John Baranek is organizing Four Seasons volunteers to help host a BBQ at March ARB, currently slated for Sept., 6. We hope to have these hygiene kits prepared for distribution at that time. If you would like to assist our Blue Thong Society chapter by donating hygiene items for us to assemble into kits, the following items are needed: toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, shampoo, soap or body wash, deodorant, towels and wash cloths (new or gently used), socks and t-shirts (preferably new or gently used), and disposable razors. These items can be from hotels, or easily acquired from DollarTree or 99 cent stores. To prevent an overabundance of any one item, please consider purchasing/donating at least the first 6 objects on the above list. If you want to donate any of these items, please put them in a bag and designate them as "Homeless Veterans Donation" then drop them off at the Lodge desk. I will collect them regularly. Our chapter will be assembling the kits on Aug. 31 at 1 pm at my home. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me, Karen Brown, Hemet Chapter Director, at (951) 325-8182. Thank you in advance for your support of this worthy project! BBQ to BeneFit VeterAns: We are planning a BBQ for the homeless vets scheduled for Sept. 5, at March Air Reserve Base. This is what is planned: • BBQ for 250 homeless veterans. • 100 of them are single males that are housed in a barracks on the base with 90 percent of them going through rehabilitation to get back into society. The other 10 percent have mental or physical disabilities that render them permanently disabled. • 150 people from Colton that are veterans, spouses, and their children. These have lost, or are in the process of losing, their home. They are receiving assistance from US vets to stay afloat, and many of them are without jobs. • We need donations of money to purchase food for the BBQ. We would like to have chicken, ribs, and tri-tip for the veterans, with sloppy joes and hot dogs for the children. • All the cooking will be done on site by volunteers. • Jeanne Lincoln is rounding up ladies to bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, fudge etc., for dessert after dinner. Please contact Jeanne if you would like to help. • The Blue Thong ladies are packaging 100 hygiene kits to be handed out to the neediest veterans. (see their request in this newsletter) Many of you have said that this is a great group to do something for, and I agree. Let me close by leaving you with this thought: All of these men and women, at one point, were of sound mind and body when they were asked and agreed to defend this country. Because of the experiences they had while serving our country they are no longer in the same physical or mental condition as they were when they signed up. We want to provide them with an enjoyable day and a way to say "Thank You for your service" to a large group of heroes. Thank you Four Seasons for your support and help.
