11 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | September 2014 | Crumbs from Cookie: That was a fantastic program presented by Patti Meinhardt in July. Her handouts on the 25 documents to have in place in case of an emergency were invaluable resources for us. August had our favorite doctor, Dr. Koka, speaking about Osteoporosis. It amazes me that we can have top notch speakers for our community that are absolutely free! Do take advantage of our programs. Sunshine is a unique group of women whose main focus is helping residents in time of need. Sunshine is not a club or a committee. We are a team. We gather once a month to decide how we can improve our services for you. I love our programs but our job is to be sure your celebration of life is always handled with love and dignity. I especially like the "personal table" that has evolved in recent years showing all areas of their life. Though we are not a club, we must be self-supporting. We are supported strictly through donations. The donations are used to better our service for you. We are non-profit so your donation is passed on to the next resident in need. Family members used to rent tablecloths at $10 a table. Through a generous donation from Glen Turner's family we purchased tablecloths you can use free. And, they're golden, to make the room look beautiful. We hope you never need us, but if you do we will honor your loved one with respect and love. We have medical equipment galore. You can call Jeanne Lincoln or Leola Kindt and simply borrow the item! Free. We lend out wheelchairs, walkers, canes… you name it. Recently Mike Thuman needed a walker for his wife Kathy and when they returned it they made a donation to Sunshine. Kathy and Mike — we thank you so much! We appreciate you! Part of our job is to be a resource for you. We have had residents asking about cancer support groups and a team member took the challenge to find out if there were any. At the Hemet Valley Medical Center, Shirley Waller-Ball, (951) 926- 2145, has a group that provides support and understanding. Please call Shirley to make sure Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30 pm is still current. I would like to mention two very important members of my team. First, my secretary, friend, reminder of all things important, Jeanne Lincoln. Ask anyone about my memory and they'll say, "what memory?" Jeanne takes all those minutes and sends me numerous reminders. No matter who I am meeting with I have asked Jeanne to always be there. I need her notes. Friends, I have had a lot of meetings. She is always by my side. I do select a lot of our speakers but Jeanne won't let up until she obtains as much information as possible and then she wants a picture! She is in charge of the guest book at our celebrations of life and takes that role very seriously. I love you Jeanne and appreciate all you do for this special team. Secondly, Leola Kindt. How do those posters just appear? When ideas are presented at our meetings and signs are needed, I'm given a choice of a couple in 24 hours. One of the things talked about at our meeting was to come up with something to help the spouse gather information for the needed bio. I now have a Memorial Bio Worksheet in my hands. It will be of help for the spouse when the brain is not working. What creative talent! She is a whiz with computers. I so appreciate you Leola and you make us look good in all things printed. These two ladies are my administrative chair and co-chair. A leader is only as good as their team members. Boy, have I lucked out. Thanks ladies. On a sad note, we send our love and sympathies to Millie Galles and family. Millie's beloved husband of 52 years, John, passed away in early July. John was active in many activities at Four Seasons. He was known as "Farmer John" in his neighborhood, tending his garden and sharing vegetables. A Celebration of Life was sponsored by Sunshine and held in the Ballroom. He will be missed by all who knew him. For those of you who have suffered a loss that we were unaware of, we send our sympathies and love to you and your families. May rays of Sunshine help you heal. Tidbits from Donna: September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is a serious disease that affects thousands of men during middle and late age, with most prostate cancers occurring in men over age 65. In 2013, The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 239,000 American men will be diagnosed with this condition (NCI, 2013). Check out this website for valuable information of prostate cancer: www.healthline.com/health/prostate-cancer Please fill out a *NEEDS* Form at the Lodge Front Desk if you know of someone who needs assistance. Also, if you have knowledge of a friend or neighbor who is living alone, please let them know of the Healthy Elder Life Program (888) 983-5337. They will assist in many ways, including daily phone calls. Also, our bulletin board in the Multipurpose Room has current contact and resource information.
