From The President – Henry Negrete: Ladies and Gentlemen: Now and then members of our club ask about fund raisers and how is it that we become associated with an organization or support a particular charity. I would venture to say that some members believe that as club President, I get to pick and choose a charity of my choice. Nothing could be further from the truth and please allow me to respond to what I believe to be a total misconception. First and foremost, everyone should understand that we, as a club, are organized, directed, and managed by a board of directors. Most of the positions on the board are elected by our membership. This structure is designed to provide our members with a vehicle to express your views and share your ideas. We are also a non-profit organization and in all cases, choose a charity to support based on recommendations. A recommendation may be made in the form of a written proposal. Sometimes a recommendation is made verbally by a member of the board and often on behalf of one of our club members. Once the charity has been established, the board moves to prepare and organize the fundraising event. Planning and organizing these events is key but the actual fundraising effort is where the rubber meets the road. The event activity dictates the results but the level of heart and soul applied determines the final outcome. How much of a commitment you are willing to make will depend heavily on how you feel about the "charity" we have chosen to support and the overall feeling and understanding of the club membership towards the particular charity chosen invariably determines the end result. The U.S .Vets Barbecue effort was by no means difficult to sell. I knew from the start our members would definitely show their true colors, provided they were properly briefed and informed about the needs of our veterans at March Air Reserve Base. And in this unique situation, the board didn't have to arm wrestle to make a decision. It was simple. We were approached by our community's leaders and asked to help. Needless to say, the board responded with vigor and enthusiasm. Supporting our community's effort was vital. Subsequently, a simple motion was made to support our veterans and the vote in favor was overwhelming. By the time you read this article we will have the results of our fundraising efforts for our veterans in need. I believe the results will be nothing short of amazing and must share with you my optimism on this matter. Thinking that I have my finger on the pulse regarding our golf club, I never doubted the outcome. I honestly believe our membership has the heart and spirit to support any and all efforts that involve our men and women in uniform. We may falter slightly on other matters, but we will never waiver when it involves supporting our veterans. You have shown your true colors and I am proud to say I am President of our golf club. Our club has continuously demonstrated its true character and mental attitude towards the less fortunate. I am proud of all of our members. Our colors are flying bright and high, and boy do I love the Red, White and Blue.
