CoMMunIty news | sun lakes lIfestyles | sePteMBeR 2014 | 7 By Woody Catalano The Sun Lakes Marines and Friends are now supporting the Armed Services YMCA, (ASYMCA) Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms. We have chosen this 501c3 non-profit organization as our charity for the year, 2014. ASYMCA was established at 29 Palms in 1992 with a mission to assist and serve active duty military members and their families stationed at 29 Palms. In order to ease the frequent transitions required during the course of a military member's service, specially tailored low-cost or free programs have been designed to lighten the challenges of military members and their families whom are stationed in the area. The programs are made possible through fund raising events and the generosity of organizations and individuals. The ASYMCA Twentynine Palms does not duplicate any benefits, resources or services provided by the military or any or other organization at the Marine base nor receives any government funding. In 2014, the ASYMCA received an "Exceptional" rating from Charity Navigator for the eighth year (4 star rating) and 91 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to support the programs. The hardships put on military personnel and their families before, during and after deployments in harms way are many and the ASYMCA tries to fill the void with their programs.
