4 OUR YUCAIPA | SEPTEMBER 2014 | CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Mission Statement The Yucaipa Valley Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting a vibrant business environment by cooperative interaction among business, government and community For more information, call (909) 790-1841 • Fax (909) 363-7373 35139 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, CA 92399 info@yucaipachamber.org "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." ~ Ronald Reagan My wife and I were discussing how hard our children have it today from the price of groceries, insurance, housing, gasoline, etc. Then I read this article in the newspaper about a family from Vietnam. Here is an excerpt from the article: "In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus said, 'When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required' (12:48 NLT). I used to wonder what Jesus meant, because I sure didn't think it was my family. The way I saw it, we had been given nothing, entrusted with nothing. I hoped that rich and powerful people would read Jesus's words and take them to heart. "But when I went back to Vietnam, I finally understood: He meant me. I was the one plucked from the South China Sea. I was the one granted asylum in a nation where education is available to everyone, and prosperity is attainable for anyone. I worked hard to get to where I am today, but the humbling truth is that my hard work was possible because of a blessing I did nothing to deserve. And that blessing is something I must pass on, in any way I can. "My story is true for all of us, whether you arrived in this country by boat or by birth. Much has been given to us — and much is required. That I believe, is what it means to be an American." ~ Vinh Chung The truth is we are so fortunate to live in America, and especially in the wonderful community of Yucaipa. Now I would like to throw out a little extra thought since we have an election coming up. How many times have you seen our Yucaipa city council around town? Are they at the ribbon cuttings for a new business in town? Do you see them at the Farmers Market? How about a fundraiser for a local child? I see which council members are active in our community and have made note of it, how about you? Something to think about before you vote this November. 2014 Board of Directors Chairman, Jim Hammond Comfort Keepers Chair-Elect, Nancy Kenny First Choice Loan Services Finance Vice-Chair, Jason Ross Law Office of Linda Roberts-Ross Directors Dr. Cheryl Marshall Crafton Hills College Dora Ordonez Asaderos Restaurant & Supermarket Cheryl Benton NuSkin Eric Vreeman YCJUSD Jeff Dewan Edward Jones Financial Advisors Lynnette Alvarado Wildwood Canyon Villa CHAMBER STAFF Pamela Emenger, President/CEO Ellen Benefiel, Membership Development Coordinator AMBASSADOR TEAM David Avila, Retired Cal Fire Battalion Chief Cheryl Benton, NuSkin Pamela Brierley-Vengarick, Good Nite Inn Marlyn Crampton, Yucaipa Rotary Club Jeff Dewan, Edward Jones Marie Feuer, Life Path Healings Brandy Gomez, Law Office of Linda Roberts-Ross Debbie Harber, Sequoia Digital Marketing Nancy Kenny, First Choice Loan Services Michelle Lopez, AVON Dora Ordonez, Asaderos Supermarket Pink Glambulance Boost Mobile Raven's Nest Art Gallery Uribe Farmers Insurance Agency Thank You Renewing Members Welcome New Members Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon Dairy Queen/Orange Julius 7-11 Convenience Store Miche American Road Trip Bar & Grill Dynasty Suites Hotel If you are a current participating business, please send in your renewal fee for the 2014-2015 campaign.
