CLUBS & GROUPS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2014 35
On a nice Wednesday morning we visited the National
Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Perris, about
35 miles from here. There were 14 in our group.
Randy Thompson, Acting Director, took us on a very
informative and interesting tour of the facilities. He explained
what was available by way of records and Internet services, and
showed us the huge records storage areas.
It was an inspiration to see what is being done to preserve
and protect vital records. Many documents are one-of-a-kind,
so they are given special protection. We learned that for the
long term storage that NARA does, materials must be placed
in folders and envelopes that are rated to be archival, not just
acid-free.
You can do research at the NARA any time you want. They
have a room with computers for your use, and you can access
several research web sites and print out your findings, all for
free.
