SPORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2014 39 Racquet Club Our membership is growing and we are enjoying meeting many new friends. Many of us are getting ready to participate in the Oldlympics held in September and October in Hemet. There are lots of fun events to try. Remember — whatever activities you do here at Four Seasons, make sure you prep your body before you get moving. This means stretching before you begin your program or game. In any sport you need flexibility to move muscles and joints. In pickleball, flexibility is especially important. Flexibility is achieved by stretching. The warm up stimulates the pickleball movements like forehand, backhand, and overhead. Add some jogging in place and moving sideways around the court to warm up the lower body. For some specific exercises and stretches, please contact me. A happy pickler is a healthy uninjured one. Remember — play hard, play safe, and have a blast! Marty Key, (562) 331-0817, keeksmail@yahoo.com. ~ Marty Key Pickleball We were very active (and well fed) as summer transitioned to autumn. We wrapped up August with a play day in conjunction with a hosted U.S. Open luncheon. There was a lot of fun tennis and then we chowed down on brisket, pulled pork, beans, salad, and all the fixins. Those diners who ate their vegetables were also treated to a variety of delicious, buttery cookies baked by our own Bernadette Martin, owner and chief baker of Sweetcakes418. The Saturday play day was followed by another play day on Labor Day to get September off to a good start. Unfortunately, we didn't have another food day. October will bring the start of a new year for the club. The annual membership meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 6 pm in the Lodge. During the meeting members will be able to pay their $20 dues for the 2015 year. Committee Chair Irve Sturner will give the annual update and review of the club's activities. There will not be an election. The committee members elected last year serve for two years, and, of course, we're going to eat. Barb Miller is making the arrangements for meat and vegetable lasagna, garlic toast, fruit salad, Caesar salad, beverages, and brownies (yum!). A challenge ladder for Mixed Doubles is once again being set up. Seven teams will be among the initial competitors, but other teams can form up and join the challenge. Based on the recently concluded bracketed tournament, the seeded teams are: Larry Z. & Padoo P., Larry & Bernadette M., Loren D. and Lovey C., Richard C. & Barbara M., Den S. & Jocelyn G., Frank G. & Arlene M., Lyle C. & Tina S. Teams can challenge teams that are up to two positions higher on the ladder and make their own arrangements to play an Eight Game Pro Set. New teams start at the bottom rung and work their way up. Stakes are high, as each team has to bring a new can of balls and the winning team walks away with the unused new can and bragging rights. It should be fun. Irve will post and record the scores, and be the referee as needed. Meanwhile, social tennis will continue on the second and third Thursdays, and the open-to-all play day will be on the last Saturday of the month.
