12 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2014 | COMMUNITy NEWS Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel DiD yOu kNOw ThAT OCT. 9 iS ALSO LEif ERikSON DAy? This day was proclaimed by a joint resolution of Congress in l964 to recognize the first European to set foot on North American soil. Historians have records of Leif Erikson's travels although there are no maps or physical evidence of his journey. Leif Erikson sailed from his home in Greenland around 1002 A.D. He was searching for a land which had been seen by a Norse Sea Captain, although the captain did not actually stop and explore the land. Historians believe that Erikson landed along the coast of Newfoundland, stopped as far south as Cape Cod and spent a winter in North America. During that winter Leif Erikson and his men built a house for lodging and a shed to protect the boat during the winter. Although Leif Erikson did not return again to explore North America, his brother did. Unfortunately, his brother was killed by Indians in the process. DiD yOu kNOw ThAT ThuRSDAy, OCT. 9, iS fiRE PREvENTiON DAy? Fire Prevention Week is the entire week surrounding the historic Oct. 9. The purpose of the day is to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which was purportedly started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow. The fire burned, uncontrolled, for 27 hours. More than 300 people were killed; 100,000 people were left homeless. Over 17,000 structures were destroyed. The Saturday in Fire Prevention Week is Fire Service Recognition Day. The Fire Marshall's Association of North America (FMANA) led the drive to use these days to remind the populace about the fire dangers and ways to prevent fires in homes and businesses. In 2014, the fire awareness focus is on the value of smoke alarms, and the importance of checking periodically to make sure that they are in good working order. DiD yOu kNOw ThAT ThE SECOND mONDAy iN OCTObER iS fREquENTLy REfERRED TO AS DiSCOvERER'S DAy? Although we were frequently reminded in elementary school that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, the truth is that Native Americans were already in residence, and Nordic explorers traveled down the Canadian coast thousands of years earlier. In-depth research into Christopher Columbus' claim of discovery also revealed that his treatment of the natives was not very humane, nor were the historians absolutely sure where Columbus actually landed. The focus has recently moved to acknowledge the fact that Columbus did prove to Europeans that the world was not flat and it did not end somewhere in the Atlantic, but the designation Discoverer's Day gives credence also to the early explorers and the natives of North America.
