14 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2014 | COMMUNITy NEWS Emergency Preparedness Program (EPP) Lecia Elzig, Government Liaison, and Janet Upchurch both from the Riverside County Chapter American Red Cross will be presenters at the next EPP meeting. Janet just returned from volunteering at the Washington fires. Plan to attend this informative presentation on Oct. 2, at 10 am, in the Lodge Ballroom. ~ Jean Sandoval THE WATER TEAM During a disaster or emergency, water supplies may be cut off or the water supply may be contaminated. If the water pipes in your home are damaged, turn off the main water valve to your home. Refer to your Residents' Emergency Hand Book for more detailed information. • Water quickly becomes a precious resource following many disasters. It is vital that all household members learn how to shut off the water at the main house valve. • Cracked lines may pollute the water supply to your house by allowing contaminants into the water supply. • Water leaks can cause property damage and create an electrocution hazard. It is wise to shut off your water until you hear from authorities that it is safe for drinking. • The effects of gravity may drain the water in your hot water heater and toilet tanks unless you trap it in your house by shutting off the main house valve. • Do not turn off the water at the street valve in the cement box at the curb - this valve is extremely difficult to turn and requires a special tool. • The water shutoff is usually located in the garage or where the water line enters the home. The water shutoff is located on a riser pipe and is usually a red or yellow wheel or lever. Turn wheel clockwise to shut off (see various examples of water shut-off valves). • Do not drink water that has an unusual odor or color. • Drink only bottled or treated water. Have at least two cases of water to 'shelter in place' in your home. • Pool and spa water is not safe to drink but can be used for hygiene, laundry or cleaning purposes. ~ LaVerne Prophet Save a life.
