| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | October 2014 | 32 Bocce Shuffleboard Horseshoes I want to thank those of you who showed up at the first horseshoe game. Things were a little confusing and did not start off to a good start. But we had lots of input from the players and I think we can get off to a better start at the next game. As always, we need the idea's from the players so that we can fine tune the club and attract more players. We would still welcome those of you who missed the actual sign up day to come join us, we would like to continue to grow the horseshoe club since it is a new one for this year. The ladies are also welcome and we do have ladies horseshoe's which are just a little bit lighter than the mens. We have picked Saturday mornings at 8:30 am to start the games and for the present we are having everyone show up at that time and will start to stagger the times once we all get the hang of things and the games can go just a bit smoother. There is no cost to the players and all things necessary to play are there except chairs. Presently we have two benches, so bringing a fold up chair is a good idea. We want to encourage you to just come out and try it. You just might like it and having fun spreads around quickly. We plan to play about 10 weeks so Nov. 8 will be the last game and this will give you lots of time to enjoy the holidays with your family. If you have questions, please feel free to call me for additional information at (951) 926-8295. Our new start time is Thursdays at 9 am and we do have some room in the 11 am and 12 pm leagues. Getting the word out for activities is not always the easiest thing to do but we do realize we need to try harder next year to promote more players to turn out for shuffleboard. We have about 90 players this year which is pretty good although we would like to see the club grow a little more. This is one of the easiest outdoor activities we have here in our community and this is something you can do even if you have a physical impairment. Walkers, scooters, canes, and other impediments don't seem to get in the way for our players, so come on out. Our courts have just gone through a new glazing and polish so the courts have little resistance when the pucks are pushed across them. Not to mention that we do have a potluck and luncheon scheduled for the Club. And yes, we will have a Championship Game and the winners do end up with a little cash to go do some shopping at the end of the season. Putting together a club with a schedule and players to match those schedules along with court assignments and the schedule of a championship game is not easy and takes a lot of time. We are lucky to have Sue Malarkey who patiently does everything for us so when you see her give her a little thank you — she deserves it. Come watch the players on Thursdays and see if you would like to join them. Info., Shuffleboard Chairperson, Ross Brunetto, (951) 926-8295 In August, we kicked off the season with sign ups, but didn't start playing until September. This year we ended up with 24 teams with four players on each team. We informed everyone that the Spare Tire Rule was officially voted on by the Bocce Committee to indoctrinate it into our rules for this year. This allows teams to have more than four players and can sub when other players on the team have other obligations, or emergencies. They can also play in the Championship game if someone is sick on their team. An email was sent out to all Team Captains asking which teams would accept additional players to their teams so hopefully you will see the advantage and the club still can increase the number of players without creating a lot of teams. The Bocce Committee also voted on some additional rules that explain how to throw the Pallino and should have been explained at the sign ups, but were overlooked. Sometimes you have to say sorry, we goofed and get it to the players the best way you can. We feel it is a good rule that will help the referee's concentrate more on the center playing area of the courts and makes it fairer to all players. Our BBQ moved to Oct. 5 where better planning and more volunteers can be arranged for this event. Margie Culton and her staff of helpers will make the function very likeable with their decorations and will have a different theme for each potluck. Please volunteer if you can, your help is always appreciated and much needed. One thing that was not mentioned is that we want everyone to have fun. If you have an idea for a function or just something in general, please come forward and we will make sure your idea or opinion is heard. Meanwhile we wish everyone good luck and may the best team win. Ross Brunetto, 926-8295.
