I understand what city staff is talking about so there is a smaller learning curve for me. Bogh: I do not take money from anyone. I finance my own campaign so I'm not tied to any particular group. Masner: Experience, number one! I have the interest and drive to be successful in getting business here. Business is the engine that makes everything work. I'm not a politician, I'm a public servant and I've been a public servant since I was 19. Powell: I'm a reasonable-thinking person and I'm willing to compromise. I have an engineering background and contractor's license A. I'm an independent thinker but I like input from others so I can learn from others who may be more educated than I on a particular project or subject. 7. What is your platform/strongest issues you are running for? Avila: Maintaining Yucaipa's rural feel, managed growth. I am a big supporter of small business. Most of my family members were business owners. Rent control for mobile home park residents. Bogh: A fiscally sound budget. I am pro-business. Masner: Representing what the citizens of Yucaipa want. Getting retail out on the freeway corridor. Powell: Conservation; reasonable and responsible development; against big box stores, but would consider one at the freeway; sympathetic to the needs of the people; small business owners need protection; rent control for the mobile home park residents. 8. What are you most proud of during your tenure as a city council member? (Bogh & Masner only) Bogh: In the four years I have served I'm proud of the city becoming more business friendly; the business atmosphere has improved tremendously; we have a mix of good restaurants now; attending the ICSC Conference and courting businesses to come to Yucaipa; the completion of the Uptown Revitalization project and allocating funds for the 4th of July event. Personally, I am proud of working through the issues with Hoover Ranch. Masner: Advocating for the citizens of Yucaipa for sixteen years; the completion of City Hall and the Police Station. I was on the ad hoc committee for the Police Station. I was responsible for flying the Twin Towers flag on the Police Station flag pole on 9/11 this year. My wife was presented the flag at ground zero by the Port Authority in memory of the 39 officers and 1 K-9 who were killed trying to get people out of the towers. 9. How do you see Yucaipa in 5-10 years? Avila: Uptown finally built out; open up closed shops. My vision is to see a commercial corridor along the freeway, not just retail but industrial as well, like Sorenson Engineering, which provides careers. An industry that Crafton Hills College and Brandman University can support by training employees for that industry. Bogh: I truly want to see the city grow. We are trending in the right direction and I would like to continue that. Powell: Beautification for our roads and neighborhoods. The homeless and drug problem is a concern and I would like to make that a priority. The Crafton Hills College development intrigues me and I think it might make a good addition to the community. Smart on crime and upholding a good fire department.
