26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2014 | COMMUNITY CALENDAR Counter Culture Cinema The Counter Culture Cinema Club has twice-monthly screenings of movies you may not find at your Cineplex: indie films, foreign films, documentaries, etc. Check us out. Our first November screening, on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 6 pm, is the film Ida (Poland 2013, 82 minutes, English subtitles). Here is a brief description from IMDB.com: "Poland, 1962. Anna, an orphan brought up by nuns in the convent, is a novice. She has to see Wanda, the only living relative, before she takes her vows. Wanda tells Anna about her Jewish roots. Both women start a journey not only to find their family's tragic story, but to see who they really are and where they belong. They question what they used to believe in. Both of them are trying to go on living but only one eventually can." Our second November screening, on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 6 pm, is the film The Unknown Woman (Italy 2006, 118 minutes, English subtitles). Here is a brief description from IMDB.com: "A Ukrainian woman named Irena calculatedly insinuates herself into the lives of a young, affluent Italian family. Stopping at nothing to become the couple's trusted maid and the beloved nanny to their fragile young daughter, Irena risks everything in her quest to uncover the truth about the family. Like an intricately constructed jigsaw puzzle, The Unknown Woman reveals piece by piece the enigma of Irena's past." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early. We hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Hello everyone. Join us in the Ballroom for our Christmas Dinner/Dance on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 5 to 9:30 pm. We will have live music, a 5-star dinner, dancing, great prizes and 50/50 raffle. Our Ballroom will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland. It will be the Christmas memory you will cherish forever. We opened up ticket reservations in September and we have sold out. We have decided that since we got such great response so early, we will keep a wait list. If you have a ticket and an emergency arises, and you cannot come, you can resell your ticket to the next person on the wait list. "Murphy's Law'' is always at work, so we know this will happen, you will not lose your money and someone else can attend. If you are interested in being put on the wait list, please call Roxie Elliott at (951) 769-2517. The multicultural evening of Christian & Gospel Music is also coming together. If you have a talent — singing, playing the piano, praise dancing, etc. — come and be a part of this event. There's still time to sign up. The date is Sunday, Feb.8, 2015. It is a free event. All of the community is welcome. All in our community are encouraged to share their talent. Help make this event an evening to renew your spirit and warm your soul. If you are interested in performing, please contact Cookie Bonner, (951) 769-7679. More to come. Our October meeting was great. We had super attendance and had a couple of guest speakers: Mark Orozco, the gentleman running for City Council, shared some important information with us about our city and his views of what he wanted to achieve if he were elected. We also had Dr. Jameelah Medina, Ph.D. She give us some great information on alternative therapies to help us fight inflammation, allergies, etc. with natural products instead of drugs. Dorothy Cole, an AACC member, invited all of us to a fund raiser Pancake Breakfast on Nov. 8 at Applebee's in Beaumont from 8 to 10 am. The 501c charity was set up by her family in honor of her daughter to help encourage education and fight cancer. Our next meeting is Dec. 2. We meet in the Card Room at 6 pm. Contact Betty Ann James (951) 572-5538 for more information. We are striving to be a productive part of our community. We welcome new members, come and join us. ~ Roxie Elliott African American Culture Club
