48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2014 | SpORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Ping Pong Club
On Sept. 24, six members of our Four Seasons Ping Pong
Club played in the table tennis tournament at the Oldlympics in
Hemet. This was the 30th anniversary for these senior games
and the number of competitors and quality of competition just
keeps getting better every year. This year our Four Seasons
players included Gil Apodaca, Lian Lee, Rony Tordesillas, Barry
Pope, Richard Carrasco and Niles Sundstrom.
In singles play, Gil Apodaca made it all the way to the final
match in his age category and eventually took home the silver
medal. This was Lian Lee's first adventure into tournament
play and she made it a good one by winning the bronze medal,
also in singles play.
For the first time in 30 years, the Oldlympics included a
doubles competition in table tennis. This new competition
attracted 14 teams. Doubles partners were chosen on the
basis of a drawing. Niles Sundstrom was paired up with Ken
Swanson who plays on the Sun Lakes Club and Barry Pope was
paired up with Willy Escobar who plays for the Sun City club.
Round after round of table tennis was played until there were
four teams left. Barry and Willy emerged out of those final
four with a bronze medal and Niles and Ken emerged with a
gold medal. All in all, everyone played well and enjoyed this
tournament very much.
You don't have to be a tournament player to play ping pong.
Everyone is welcome to join us in the Aerobics Room Monday
through Friday at 10:30 am and on Saturday at 11 am. Come
and find out why table tennis is rapidly becoming one of the
most popular recreational sports among those "55 or better."
