In a recent meeting we were treated to this uplifting
information. Enjoy!
"Ida Keeling, a 99 year-old great-grandmother from New
York recently became the 95-99 age group world record holder
in the 100 meter run. Ida finished in 59.8 seconds, becoming
the first woman in history to compete in the event in the 95+
age group in an internationally certified race.
Ida, just 4'6" and 83 pounds, started competitive running at
age 67 to help deal with grief over losing her two sons in drug-
related homicides. Her advice on longevity? "Eat for nutrition,
not for taste. Do what you need to do, not what you want to do
and don't leave out your daily exercise. Love yourself."
Some comments from Ida – She prefers to eat her evening
meal – a hamburger, fish, or liver – for breakfast. "Gives me fuel
for the day", she said. And her health regime is paying dividends
– she takes just one prescription drug and could easily pass for
a woman 20 years younger. She is determined to keep running
as long as possible and to outlive her grandmother, who
survived until the age of 104. "Every year I am going to keep
doing what I am doing, and when running time comes, if I feel I
am ready, I will go at it". She turns 100 next May. Go Ida! What
an inspiration to us all!
We meet every Wednesday at 9 am in the Multipurpose
