health & spoRts Clubs | sun lakes lIfestyles | JanuaRy 2015 | 33 The new bocce ball year is about to begin! After the long holiday layoff, doesn't that sound good?! If you haven't already signed your team up for the Winter Tournament, you still have time to do so. The deadline for entering your team is Jan. 9, with play beginning the week of the 19th. If your team is in need of a winter replacement, probably because one or more of your teammates is reluctant to venture into the 'cold' for one hour a week, let Dutch know. She's originally from Michigan and can't understand how weather in Southern California can be called 'cold'! Anyway, she might have players who find themselves in the same position in which you find your team, and can help you flesh the team out for the winter. Give her a call at 845-0392. Keep in mind that club dues are due, $12 for 2015. In addition, each teammate will owe $3 for the tournament team fee. These monies are used to fund the restaurant gift certificates that are won for the semi-finalists, finalists and the winners of each tournament. It's very helpful if all teams monies and entry form are delivered together to the address mentioned below. Speaking of winners, the B League winners were John and Judy Davis, Sue Shubert and Lois Preston. Movin' on up and well done! The A League winners were no surprise… Tony and Maria Manriquez and Garry and Vivian Myrdahl. Congrats! The AA League winners were a bit of a surprise — our club Pres and his harem: John Jones, Carol Meagher, Nancy Ebner and Evelyne Grana. It was a long time coming and well-deserved. Unfortunately, the December article for Lifestyles failed to make the issue, but was sent to those members who have shared their email addresses with us. Those members have also received the 2015 schedule with the dates of the beginnings, ends and playoffs of each tournament. If you didn't receive one, it is posted on the back of the bocce shed. By the way, should you need a phone number of a teammate at the last minute, check the back side of the bulletin board. All the teams are listed there, with names and phone numbers included. If you still haven't entered your team, but wish to do so, entries and monies go to 1288 Pleasant Valley, as usual. There is a box at the door. Brave the cold, dress warm and spend an hour competing and interacting with the other hardy bocce players. It's fun! Friends of Bocce Hey billiards players; do you enjoy the game of 8-Ball? If so, come on down to our Billiards Room any day except Sunday and practice with members of the 8-Ball Group. New players are more than welcome to join in. We usually arrive around noon and play until 2:30 pm or so. We 'pea' for partners and play to improve our 'game.' Competition is friendly, and helpful hints are common-place, as we're there to learn on those practice days. It's a bit more serious on tournament days. Every Thursday we host three matches here and one match at an away location nearby. While the competition is still friendly, there are no suggestions for improvement during these matches! If you want a more serious game, join a team and play in our tournaments. Cost is $15 for a three-month season. For more information, contact Steve Felber at 769-6898 or SNFELBER@yahoo. com. The holiday season is fast approaching and with cooler weather here, it's a great time to consider taking up the #1 fastest growing sport for seniors. You can learn a great deal about this sport by visiting www.pickleballchannel.com. Pickleball is played every morning at 7:30 am, Monday through Saturday. New players are always welcome and equipment can be provided for loan. Paddle Tennis regular scheduled play is Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday at 8 am, and Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6 pm. Club membership dues are $10 annually and further information can be obtained by contacting Royce Newman (951) 769-1103. Additionally, check out the bulletin board at the courts for further information on events and activities.
