COMMUNITY NEWS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2015 15 The speakers at a Town Hall Meeting in the Lodge Ballroom on Dec. 16 addressed the issue of saving water, which also saves us money. Drought is not a new condition for California. It has been part of the rain cycle since records have been kept. However, as our population increases and water consumption increases, we need to be more concerned about how we can save water during the dry spells. Likening the water systems to tuning up a car so that it runs more efficiently, the first speaker, Susan Savolainen, who has spent 20 years as a landscape manager and a certified landscape irrigation auditor, walked the audience through 11 simple steps to save water in our landscape. She started by taking a careful look at the water irrigation systems that we use, pointing out the need to check the pipes and valves for leaks, note the water pressure (add a regulator if necessary), adjust the sprinkler heads, making sure that the nozzles match and adjusting the controller program for maximum efficiency. She gave reasons for adding mulch to flower beds and shrubs, aerating the lawns annually to improve water infiltration, using slow-release fertilizers and being aware of the ratio of the ingredients in the fertilizer used. Our own Landscape Committee Chairperson Len Tavernetti, followed with an overview in detail about the methods Four Seasons uses to maintain the common area landscape. His specific knowledge of our systems was quite impressive. He not only described the irrigation systems, he described the number of controllers and sprinkler types that are in use and the manpower required to maintain them. If you missed the presentation, you might want to talk with your neighbors about the simple steps suggested or plan to attend a meeting or two of the Landscape Committee to learn more about how we are conserving water in our community. ~ Bobbie Eckel Town Hall Meeting Addresses Water Issues The 6th Annual Veterans, Military, Family and Friends Expo will be Saturday, Jan. 31, from 9 am to 1 pm at the Beaumont Civic Center, 550 E. 6th Street. This is a free event. This expo will be an extra special one as we honor Viet Nam Veterans. Encourage all to come to be recognized and show support. Representatives from many agencies, schools, businesses and other organizations will be there with information, contacts, resources and benefits. Loma Linda VA and Riverside County Veteran Services will be able to check status and help with claims. A special career and job search workshop will be presented by the Inland Library System.
