46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2015 | SPORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Racquet Club Happy New Year to all! The pickleball players continue to enjoy the exercise and friendships we are building. It has been windy, cold and even the rain has tried to make us house bound; but we get the call of the courts and cannot stay away. This game is truly addicting! Tips from a pro- How to win at doubles ! Doubles in pickleball requires patience, discipline, and encouragement. But most of all it is about having fun! In pickleball the early bird does not always get the worm. The team with the most patience will often win the game. Pulling the trigger too soon creates unforced errors. Well seasoned players will take advantage of a team/player that lacks patience and it is not hard for them to identify such teams/players. Always have happy feet and don't plant yourself. Reaching for balls instead of moving to them results in more errors. Practice trying to get a nice, long, hard deep serve return. Those drop shots on or near the back line are very tough to return. Pickleball, like everything else in life, needs to be fun! Compliments and encouragement will take you further and will relax your partner. Remember-practice, practice, practice! Drill, drill, drill! Go out and HAVE FUN. Happy New Year from all the joyous picklers! Come try us out! Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9 am. The first special event will be another "Red versus Blue" Independence Day team competition, conveniently scheduled for Saturday, July 4. Shortly after that battle royal, will be a Play Day with an attached hosted lunch, plus Wimbledon watching on Saturday, July 11. August will just be hot and have a regular Play Day without food on Saturday, Aug. 29. But come September, wait a week, and we will have another hosted lunch in conjunction with the U.S. Open on Saturday, Sept. 5. On Oct. 20, we will hold our annual meeting, including committee elections, and again, this is an occasion for us to party and eat. So, be sure to put all of these dates on your busy social calendar. During 2015, Play Days will continue to be scheduled for the last Saturday of every month. Play Days are an opportunity for all Four Seasons Beaumont residents to participate in social, fun tennis matches, irrespective of one's level of tennis expertise. However, at the December Play Day competition was keen and intense, because the Nelsons were holding a ticket pulling drawing again. As each game winning player received one ticket per victory, chances of winning the drawing prize improved with every triumph. Nevertheless, despite a paucity of tickets, the winning ticket belonged to Victor Flores. He became the proud owner of a bamboo wind chime, sure to annoy his neighbors during our frequent Beaumont breezes. The Racquet Club Committee will continue to hold its meetings at 4 pm on the third Tuesday of each month. These meetings are held in the Board Room at the Lodge. Members are welcome to attend, and then they can be first in line for Taco Tuesday dinner at the Bistro. Dewey Allen is one of our original 8-Ball Club original players and is one of the best, if not the best player we have; when he is hot, he's hot. Dewey has played and loved our sport for over 60 years and is a very, very good competitor. Just playing with Dewey you can learn so much, and we appreciate playing with such a seasoned player. This last month Dewey won both our 8-Ball in-house tournament and the in house 9-Ball tournament. Congratulations on those wins Dewey! We practice together at 7 pm on the first and third Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly 8-Ball Club meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. The In-house 8-Ball tournament is on the second Wednesday at 7 pm. In-house 9-Ball tournament is now on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Our "traveling tournaments" are the second and fourth Monday of the month. The second Monday, we travel to Solera in Hemet and the fourth Monday they come here. Check the message board in the Billiards Room for any changes of dates or locations.
