46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2015 | SPORTS & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Racquet Club February brings us Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day, and on Saturday, Feb. 28, a tennis Play Day. All residents are welcome to come out and play; we play short sets and rotate players, and everyone gets to play. Sometimes there are even prizes, when Mickey and Howard Nelson find something in their garage to get rid of. Back in December, they were all ready with a classic music prize, probably on a 78 rpm record. Unfortunately, they will have to put it back on the shelf, because foul weather caused the cancellation of the Play Day. At least it did for most people, the smart ones. A (fool)hardy group comprised of Julie Stayner, Sayed Ali, Howard Levine, and Steven Hovey braved the wind and cold and played anyway. It may be because three of that foursome are still employed full time and they couldn't pass up a chance to play tennis, despite the strong winds that caused them to play on Court 1 and sometimes on Court 2. If wind tunnel tennis wasn't strange enough, on Christmas Eve day, when the weather was beautiful, the courts were visited by Rude Rolf (pictured), one of Santa's less well-known and competent reindeer, who had been securely contained at the North Pole's reindeer retention center and rendering plant. Appearing particularly goofy in a plaid elf cap with his smallish antlers protruding, Rude Rolf played poorly, likely due to his cleaved hooves and notoriously weak backhand. Hopefully, February will be a better month and there will be something sensible to write about. In the meantime, remember the regular play day is on the last Saturday of every month. Play starts at 8:30 am and all residents are welcomed. Please visit our website at www.fsbrc. org. ~ Steven Hovey On a sad note, I was informed of the passing of an old friend. Maurice "Mo" Dumas was a long time member of the 8-Ball Club and a good friend. We will miss you Mo. If you've ever thought that winning our In-House 8 and 9 Ball tournaments was exclusively the domain of so called seasoned veterans, you may want to talk to John "Nick" Nicholson or Mary Ann Diehl, two of our club's newest members. In 8-Ball, Nick went undefeated into the final round with Kenny Payne. Kenny made a brilliant defensive shot that resulted in a foul for Nick and subsequent que ball in hand for Kenny who took the first round. Nick then rebounded in game two to take his first championship title. Mary Ann ran through the entire field in the 9-Ball tournament undefeated the whole time. The finals included Gary Christie and Mary Ann who won five straight games to become the 9-Ball Monthly Champion. Congratulations to Nick and Mary Ann for their great play, sportsmanship and welcomed friendship. Our team practices together at 7 pm on the first and third Mondays, every Wednesday and every Friday. Monthly 8-Ball Club meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. The in-house 8-Ball tournament is on the second Wednesday at 7 pm. In-house 9-Ball tournament is on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. Our "traveling tournaments" are the second and fourth Monday of the month. The second Monday, we travel to Hemet Solera and the fourth Monday Solera Hemet comes here. Check the 8-Ball Club message board in the Billiards Room for any changes of dates or locations.
