The lure of chocolate brought out over 80 residents to our meeting in January. New President Suzi Messick introduced her new board. Vice Presidents Carol Herwig and Connie Cutner presented the program on trivia of chocolate. Chocolate is thought to date back at least to 1900 BC where the Olmec Indians in southern Mexico used it as a ritual drink. In its pure form it is bitter. Milk, sugar and spices were later added in the 19th century to make it more popular. The first chocolate bar was produced by Cadbury in 1842 in England. Milton Hersey was a caramel candy maker and in 1893 started covering his caramel in chocolate. The average American will eat about 10 to 12 pounds of chocolate a year. Dark chocolate is thought to be good for the heart. Join us March 27 for "It's A Wrap… The Many Uses Of Phyllo Dough." Our speaker will be Nitsa Houvardes of the Fat Greek restaurant in Yucaipa.
