Welcome Home: If you are new to Sun Lakes as of the first of the year, and haven't already been contacted by a Welcome Home committee member, please accept this invitation to a Welcome Home get together on Wed., March 4, from 5 to 7 pm in The Sandwedge. We will be serving pizza, salad and refreshments while delegates and hosts will apprise you of all the wonderful reasons for making Sun Lakes your home. Please call Sandy Richman at 769-7595 or Cheryl Chapman at 845-3018 to RSVP, or if you have any questions. Our monthly assessment fee increased $6 this past January for a total of $236 a month during the year 2015. This was necessary to generate income for the HOA to manage our forecasted expenses for the year. Most members of our HOA are aware that we are one of the most solvent senior communities in the country. And yet we have one of the lowest monthly fees in relation to all of the amenities we enjoy. You really can't have it any better than that. There are many members, however, who believe we should sell "social memberships" to increase our income and ward off any future increases in our monthly fees. Just exactly what are they talking about? It appears a "social membership" would be a package of amenities that we would sell to seniors outside of our complex and they would become a social member of our community. The package would probably consist of playing golf on our courses and being able to use our two restaurants: the Main Clubhouse Dining Room and the Sandwedge. An annual fee would be established by the Board of Directors for these amenities. The fees would increase the income of our two entities that everyone is complaining about for losing money. It is said there are many seniors in the Pass Area interested in such a program since we are the only private club with restaurants available. Of course, what the fees would be and how many people in the Pass Area would be interested is anybody's guess. Here is what has been happening the last few years. Most new homeowners do not play golf. Our golfing community has dwindled from 33 percent ten year ago to about 12 percent. We cannot expect the group of golfers to underwrite the entire cost of the golf operation. Please remember when we purchased a home at Sun Lakes Country Club, we purchased the entire package: golf courses, pools, clubhouses and so on. Moreover, with the great menus and low prices in our dining rooms, our restaurants have had an increase in business, but not near the increase we should be experiencing. It appears too many of our residents want 'fast food' prices for menus like Mimi's or Coco's. Finally, all of our amenities, particularly the golf courses meandering throughout our complex, have an effect on the evaluation of our homes. Our homes would be worth a lot less without them. Do you want the HOA to generate more income to pay the bills and keep the assessment low, or do you want to be a private community? You may have to choose sometime in the future!
