In the early 1900s Vernon and Irene Castle were a well-known dance team. They danced in movies and Broadway shows, and helped promote ragtime, jazz-rhythms and African-American music for dance. Then they heard a slow version of the Memphis Blues and found there was no good dance for it. So they invented a dance called the "Bunny Hug," but soon changed the name to the "Foxtrot." This dance was later standardized by Arthur Murray, whose dance studios are still around. When "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and His Comets came out in the early 1950s, Decca Records didn't know what dance style it was, so they called it a Foxtrot. Well, yes, you could do a Foxtrot to it, but most people did jive or swing. Here at Four Seasons we enjoy dancing the Foxtrot smooth and easy, to a wide variety of standard tunes. It's one of several popular dances we do, and it's so versatile we can use it almost everywhere we go, like cruises, weddings and parties. Come have some fun with us. The beginning dancers learn a new dance each week, building on the dances already learned. Most steps carry over to other dances, so it becomes easier to learn as you keep attending. Learning new ways to move and new footwork takes a lot of effort, both mentally and physically. It is also a lot of fun and you get to meet new friends. The advanced class had so much fun doing the Christmas performance; they are now working on two dances for the March performance to be held in the Ballroom. It will be a lively & fun evening. Please be sure to mark your calendars & attend. It is free! The beginning class starts at 3 pm every Tuesday. We concentrate on the basic steps and dances, including the electric slide. The advanced class begins at 3:45 pm. We are always learning new dances, but, when our brains get tired, we take the time to dance to old favorites. And we always welcome new dancers. So come on, give line dancing a try! ~ Martha Franck 32 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2015 Do you enjoy dancing? Heart and Soul Line Dancing is in Da House!
