44 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2015 Paddle Tennis, understanding the game: Paddle Tennis is a type of Pickle Ball and Mini Tennis. It uses a platform type of paddle that is normally made from a carbonite type material (see picture of one type of paddle below). The grip is like a tennis racquet, and you can use the same wrap for your handle as a regular tennis racquet, but that is where the similarity ends. The two racquets, tennis and paddle cannot be interchanged between games. Paddle uses a deflated tennis ball (also known as a stage 2 ball) on a court, which is approximately ¾ the size of a regulation tennis court. With these moderately heavy paddles and lighter balls, paddle is much easier on the arm than tennis. It may be the best exercise of any racquet sport, as the typical point is fairly long with lots of rallying (hitting ball back and forth) and faster due to the smaller courts. The court boundaries are the two service boxes on each side of the net and the game can be played as singles or doubles. Since there are only two courts available here at Four Seasons Beaumont and we have many regular players, so the games played are only doubles during regular scheduled times. The serves must be hit underhand, with or without a bounce, from below the waist, with both feet behind the correct half of the service line. Once the ball is in play, it can be hit anywhere in bounds, either after one bounce or in the air. The server gets only one chance to make a good serve. Scoring is also similar to tennis, counting points are: first point 15, second point 30, third point 40 and final point is game. But if the other team ties at 40 this is referred to as 'deuce' and the teams plays until there is a two point spread. Sound confusing, please don't let the scoring scare you. If you are a new player the other team players will be happy to help you with the games score. If there are more than the eight players ready to play on the two courts then players waiting to play are rotated in a game so we all get a chance at play. So for now… good play, good times and good exercise. ~ Diana Johnson Ali Paddle Tennis Connie Cordero, Four Seasons Resident Independent Beauty Consultant (562) 677-4763 • (951) 769-6817 1486 Signal Peak, Beaumont ccordero220@marykay.com • marykay.com/ccordero220 free hostess gift! for any resident who hosts a Four Seasons Party 10% off! any purchase for Four Seasons resident COSMETICS Beautiful southern California winter day with athletes getting ready for tournament play Four Seasons Paddle Tennis Group A typical Paddle Tennis paddle Marilyn Sarchett can jump!
