FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2015 31 An introduction to Bid Whist: In the 1890s, a variant known as Bridge Whist became popular which eventually evolved into Contract Bridge. The traditional game of whist survives at social events called whist drives. There are many modern variants of whist played for fun. Bid whist is a variant of the classic card game whist and is a partnership trick-taking. As indicated by the name, bid whist adds a bidding element to the game that is not present in classic whist. It is generally accepted that the game of bridge came from the game of whist. Bid whist remains popular particularly in US military culture and a tradition in African- American culture with probable roots in the period of slavery in the United States. It's also a gathering time for friends and family as they throw down at the card table. How is bid whist played? Four people play in partnerships of two against two, with partners sitting opposite each other. Partners may be chosen by mutual agreement or by drawing cards from a pack spread face down. The two highest cards are partners, and the person with the highest card deals first. One of the attractions of bid whist is the "trash talk" or whist talk that takes place between the hands. Here are a few examples and their meaning: • Boston: when a player wins all of the books or tricks. • I smell the tea: a phrase indicating that a Boston is on the way. • Trump Tight: when the remaining cards in your hand are in the winning suit of cards. The Uptown Divas Bid Whist Group is for anyone interested in playing or who wants to learn to play bid whist. All skill levels are welcome. The environment is casual, friendly and competitively FUN, (except the trash-talk part!) We meet every first and third Friday of the month from 2 to 4 pm in the Card Room. We look forward to seeing you and listening to your trash-talk at the card table! Any questions, please call Deborah Garner at (415) 519-2070. ~ Toni Johns Uptown Divas Bid Whist Group Back row L-R: Diane Dobine, Jan White, Linda Wright, Wondell Collins, Portia Clark, Barbara Wingfeld & Toni Johns. Front row L-R: Rheuben Taylor, Beverly Manuel, Deborah Garner, Thelma Hayes, Judy McLoud, Minnie Lathrop & Shirley Caldwell On Feb. 27, we held the championship dinner for January. Robert Manuel was the winner for that month. Instead of choosing a meal, Robert and his wife Beverly prepared a meal for the club. The couple made jambalaya with shrimp and sausage along with garlic bread and a fresh garden salad. Then they finished the meal off with lemon cake and cheesecake. This resulted in a great meal for everyone. Thank you Robert and Beverly for a great evening. John Bragg was the winner for the month of February with 16 wins. He has been a consistent winner quite a few times. Looks like John might be starting a winning streak for 2015. Way to go John, keep on keeping on with your good game skills. We meet every Wednesday and Friday from 5 to 9 pm in the Lodge Game Room. For more information call Jesse at (951) 769-2035 or Reggie at (951) 769-6483. Everyone is welcome to come out and play and make some new friends. ~ Marvin A. Gaines Dominoes
