16 OUR YUCAIPA | APRIL 2015
May Day was celebrated by early European settlers but that lovely tradition seems to have fallen off our collective map. Still, in
some parts of the United States, May Baskets haven't given up the ghost. Families make small baskets and fill them with flowers or
treats, then place them on a neighbor's doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away. Tradition says that the person receiving
the basket chases the fleeing giver and then, if caught, a kiss is exchanged. You don't have to do that last part but wouldn't it be
nice to bring this tradition back? And there's no better city to revive it than Yucaipa. This May 1, make a May Basket and share
with someone who needs a smile (which is pretty much anyone). ~ Stacey Parr
