There are a lot of bad people out there who spend their time dreaming of ways to relieve us of our money. Everyday seems to begin with a friend or relative attacked by a new scheme. We are the primary targets, we are seniors, we usually have a little money saved, and we are nice and sympathetic. They also want our wallets with the credit cards, check books and money in it. We know we should not continue the conversations on the phone or listen to the pleas. But not often does anyone tell us how to protect our wallets or what to do if it turns up missing. Here are some ideas you should read slowly and think about and then do it to protect yourself. DO NOT SIGN YOUR CREDIT CARD: Instead print in that slot: PHOTO ID REQUIRED. CREDIT CARD NUMBER: If you are paying your credit card bill, never write your card number on the check, only the last four numbers, the company knows the rest. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: Never give you social security number to anyone unless it is official business. If you are in doubt, ask for a phone number and you will call them back to verify who they are. WALLET CONTENTS: Photocopy everything in your wallet. Place copies of your driver's license, credit cards, ID cards in a safe place. Copy both sides of the cards, usually the back of the cards have emergency and reporting numbers listed. TRAVELING PAPERS: Traveling domestically or abroad, carry a copy of your passport with you, it is a great form of identification. Carry that copy and the copies of wallet contents in your carry-on bag for safe keeping. You should also leave a copy with a relative or a friend. CANCELLATIONS: We are told to cancel our cards as soon as we know they are missing. Where are the numbers? Usually on the back of the cards, make a list and keep it with the card list. Next , notify the police so you have a record of the theft. Finally, notify the three credit reporting organizations and the social security office. You want them to know so your records aren't distorted. If you need the numbers, call me. It takes some doing, but if your cards are missing, you will be prepared to protect yourself. DELEGATE ASSEMBLY REPORT Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly 4 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2015 | COMMUNITY NEWS 25 Years of Sun Lakes Giving This year, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sun Lakes Charity Week, let's take a stroll down memory lane and see how it all started. Charity Week began in 1991 as a two-day celebrity golf tournament. Evidently, the developer and some early residents had contacts with Hollywood personalities and each year about 30 celebrities were invited to attend and entertain at the gala dinner on Friday night, then golf with Sun Lakes residents in the celebrity tournament on Saturday. The goal was to raise $25,000 (or more) to donate to local charities. As you can imagine, the expenses of this celebrity format took a chunk out of the final tally and detracted from the charity donations we were able to give. Towards the end of the '90s, Charity Week began to grow into more than just a golf tournament. More and more activities were added and now, Charity Week is truly a community affair. The week kicks off with Pitch and Putt and a Tennis exhibition/competition, followed by the Pancake Breakfast and Helicopter Ball Drop, a Fashion Show and luncheon, the Monster Scramble golf tournament, Bocce ball and a Gala dinner/dance on Friday with fireworks on the driving range Friday night. And, of course, golf. What was once a celebrity golf tournament is now a Pro/Am, with golf pros from the surrounding area teaming up with Sun Lakes golfers in the Pro/Am shoot-out on Saturday and the Pro/ Am tournament on Sunday. Both these events are fun to watch and residents are encouraged to follow the field and cheer on their favorite Sun Lakes team. None of this happens, of course, without the generous commitment of Sun Lakes volunteers and supporters. Since 1991, over ONE MILLION DOLLARS has been contributed to over 30 local charities as a result of Charity Week. Last year alone, we raised over $85,000. As we celebrate 25 years of giving this year, our theme is to "reach for the silver lining." Mark your calendars for June 8 to 14 and come out and play! As you join in on your favorite activity, have fun with your friends and neighbors, and enjoy all the festivities of this year's Sun Lakes Charity Week, you will be helping us to reach the Silver Lining goal of $100,000! Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there. The RELAY for Life is again coming to Sun Lakes on April 17 from 11 am until 2 pm. It will start out at our Main Clubhouse either in the Multipurpose Room or the Veranda. There will be a two mile walk route, as provided last year, or you can drive your golf cart.
