As the soil's temperature increase, nutrient in the soil convert and begin to feed the plants. It is great to see the new growth and colors of the season. I am happy to report that all of the green side bunkers on the main course are done. We added new drainage tile and new sand. The comments have been very positive from the playing members of the clubs. If you are having difficulties adjusting to the new sand, contact Al Vallecorsa, PGA for some very simple instruction or tips to make the shot easier to play. With the arrival of spring this also means greens aerification. In the beginning of April we punched holes in the greens on both courses. Aerification for the greens is vital to the greens being able to survive the warm hot weather of the summer. By reducing compaction and removing thatch we increase water percolation and air to the root system, thus reducing the disease potential over the summer months. One important topic is tree trimming and tree removal on the golf course. This year the BOD approved additional funds for much needed work to be done. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind regarding our trees. First of all, for the removal of a tree; we must have must be an Arborist Report deeming the tree as unsafe, diseased or even dead. We are aware that we have many trees that need attention to reduce the weight and density. Secondly, we don't trim trees to improve a view. Granted if we have a tree which is seriously impacted, we will do our best to improve the condition. Safety is our prime concern. You will see tree trimming being done in various areas. Please keep in mind that we are way behind in this endeavor and we are addressing many key areas at this time. See you out in the sunshine, enjoy your course. ~ Mark Burchfield, Course Superintendent Celebrate Father's Day with a buffet on Sun., June 21 from 11 am to 2 pm in the Main Ballroom. We'll have the US Open on the big screen while you eat. More details next month!
