Hello Sun Lakers, "Happy Days" if you're a person who loves the heat, one of the nice aspects of the Banning Pass in the summer months are the afternoon breezes we get. To me, it makes the heat much more tolerable because the wind movement aids keeping the greens cooler. When the afternoon heat bears down on the green surfaces, a wilt occurs very fast. The air movement is a blessing in terms of stress management on our putting surfaces. This is the one time of year I look forward to the afternoon wind here in Banning. One very big issue circling Sun Lakes is the water mandate imposed by the governor. How will the mandate affect the Sun Lakes golf course? I can only say that as of the end of April the mandate is being looked at closely by golf industry officials in regards to the guidelines within the order. Golf courses use only one percent of the potable water being used by the many water users of the state of California. The Sun Lakes Master Board is currently evaluating options with the city of Banning and industry consultants regarding feasible options regarding our water reduction and the potential of removing turf from nonessential areas of play to help us stay below the mandated water use program. One thing for certain is that many important decisions are in front of hundreds of golf courses in our state. Here are examples of the financial aspects golf represents to the state of California. Economic impact of the golf industry on California: (GCSAA California Chapter) • 866 golf courses • Direct economic impact of $6.3 billion • Total economic impact of $13.1 billion • 128,000 jobs • Total wage income of $4.1 billion • Charitable giving $364 billion Charity Week is upon the community this month. This is a large undertaking for the many groups who are working many hours to support the giving spirit of Sun Lakes. Bless you all who give of your time by supporting this great community event. I look forward to seeing many of you out supporting the cause.
