health & sports Clubs | sun lakes lIfestyles | July 2015 | 33 Congratulations to the Spring 2015 grand champions! The AA League was won by Tim and Patti Donatini and Ed and Lynn Gordon. Well done! The A League winners were Victor Airo, Tony Damjanovic, Mary Moore and Socorro Castellano. They're a team on the rise! The B League was won by Steve and Judy Garthwaite and Loretta and Dick Dirk. Good on ya, mates! Just a heads-up: The Fall Tournament begins Sept. 8, a Tuesday. Monday, Sept. 7, is Labor Day. There will be no matches that Monday, thus the Monday teams will begin their play on Sept. 14. They will play only 9 weeks as compared to the Tuesday and Wednesday teams, who will play 10. Not to worry — the missed Monday is counted as a win anyway. This is the same scenario we had in the Spring Tournament with Memorial Day. It seems many of our participants celebrate these holidays elsewhere! The Fall Tournament will end Nov. 11, with playoffs on Nov. 16 and 17. Team entries must be in by Aug. 28. We go back to our Spring Tournament times: 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 pm play. We anticipate this tournament will bring at least as many teams as we had in the Spring, when we had 87 teams playing. We're hoping to expand to Thursdays this fall. Keep that in mind as a possibility. All entries and monies are delivered to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box at the front door. Questions, call Dutch at 845- 0392. Friends of Bocce It's exciting to see the number of new players who have come out to our Sun Lakes courts to learn and experience the fun and benefits of playing pickleball. Above all, I think much of the popularity is the social aspect of meeting new friends. It isn't necessary to be a "jock" with great athletic talent for this sport as all levels of players intermix to give the game a variety of fun and enjoyment for everyone. Is it competitive? Absolutely! The great thing for new players or beginners is how comfortable the more experienced players make you feel as you learn to play and become a better player. If you would like to come out and see what this fastest growing game for seniors is all about, please come down to the courts, located behind the Main Golf Pro Shop, most any morning of the week around 8 am. If you would like additional information or have any questions, please contact Wade Sampson at 846-3209. If your preference is paddle tennis, we have a very active group of players who play simply for fun and exercise, regardless of weather conditions. Regular scheduled play is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8 am, and Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6 pm. New players are always welcome in both sports and we can provide equipment for loan to new players. If any residents have family or friends visiting who would like to play either sport, we would be glad to have them join us! Activities and events will be posted, so check out the bulletin board by the courts for scheduled events. Pickleball & Paddle Tennis Sun Lakes Paddle Tennis Mixer with Four Seasons The first ever Ladies Paddle Tennis Mixer with Four Seasons, held on June 7 and proved to be a huge success! With no intention of serious, competitive play, ladies from both clubs just mixed it up and enjoyed the fellowship of getting to know each other and just plain having fun. The Sun Lakes host team provided courtside refreshments, followed by coffee & donuts on the veranda and a great social time getting to know their new found friends. The Four Season guests were Diana Ali, Lovey Cook, Marilyn Sarchett, Padoo Peralta, Jan Pilkinton & Mo McGowan. The Sun Lakes players were Sally Wolfe, Suzanne Moore, Linda Jennings, Joy Bailey, Nancy Ebner, Jeanne McGuire & Marlene Sanders. Compliments were extended to Diana Ali of Four Seasons & Sally Wolfe of Sun Lakes for coordinating efforts in organizing this event. Having had such a good time, plans are underway to make this mixer a regular scheduled event and dates will be posted when they are available. Paddle Tennis is played Tues., Thurs. and Fri. at 8 am at the courts adjacent to the Main Clubhouse. Any new players who would like to learn to play are welcome to join and loaner paddles can be provided. Those who would like to play Pickleball can come to the courts Monday through Saturday at 7:30 am. Paddles are also available for new players.
