health & sPorts Clubs | sun lakes lIfestyles | auGust 2015 | 33 The Summer Tournament is well under way with 68 teams vying for the championships. Just a reminder, the Summer playoffs will be Mon., Aug. 24 and Tues., Aug. 25, beginning at 5 pm. Come out and cheer your friends on — makes it a whole lot more fun for everyone! Entries for the Fall Tournament must be in by Fri., Aug. 28. As always, entries and monies should be delivered to 1288 Pleasant Valley. There is a box at the door. Entry fees are $3 pp, or $12 per team. If you've picked up a new player or two who are not club members yet, their club dues are $12, plus the $3 team fee. For some reason the dues and fees seem to get all tangled up in members' minds, but, really, nothing has changed. You pay your dues once in a calendar year, beginning Jan. 1, and you pay your team fees each time you play a tournament —four if you play them all. Also, something that seems to be overlooked… any club member can be a sub, as long as they are NOT on a regular team. You do not have to be on the alternate list! Keep in mind that the first Monday of the Fall Tournament is Labor Day. Play begins the week of Sept. 8; however, Monday teams will not play the 8th, shortening their season to nine weeks. As you veteran bocce players know, the weather in the fall cools considerably by October. Thus we play a split time schedule: 5, 6, 7 and 8 pm the first few weeks and switch to 3, 4, 5 and 6 pm part way through the Tournament. Your schedules will reflect the time changes. Please, please consider playing on Thursdays this fall. We anticipate a heavy turnout. Eighty-seven teams played in the spring and we found we had to play five hours each day to get all the matches in. That's a little much for everyone. Ideally, we'd like to keep each day to three or four hours. So please give a second and third choice that includes Thursday! We know that's not always possible, particularly if your team is made up of four individuals, rather than two couples. If you're now totally confused, call Dutch (845-0392). She's the go-to for finding you a player and answering your questions. See you on the courts! Friends of Bocce With the much hotter, summer months upon us, it has done little to discourage our faithful players from hitting the courts! We have changed the morning times for play in both sports to begin at 7:30 am to beat the heat but play generally still lasts to 10 am or later. Both sports suffer the loss of regular players during the summer months with vacations and obligations they have let go during the optimal, playing times of late fall and early summer. Evening paddle tennis players, who play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, are playing at 6 pm to enjoy the cooler temps of the day as well. We know new residents of Sun Lakes have many opportunities for fun and recreation and we hope they will consider giving our sports an option for just plain, good fun, fellowship and great exercise. We encourage anyone who would like to see what a great, fun time we all have, come to the courts on most any morning of the week. Paddle tennis is played Tues., Thurs., and Fri. at 7:30 am and Pickleball is played Monday through Saturday at 7:30 am. Paddles are always available for new players and if you would like further information, please call Wade Sampson at 846-3209. Pickleball & Paddle Tennis
