The artist's perspective, by Micki Rosen: "Ever since I was a kid, I have always been into arts and crafts. I have always felt the need to have a creative outlet of some kind. Maybe it's because what I excelled at all through school and in my career was very 'left brain'. By the time I retired and moved to the Four Seasons Beaumont, I had been doing needlework (crewel, needlepoint, cross stitch, etc.) for over 40 years and I was ready to reinvent myself. I spotted the article for Rob Kelman's creative drawing and sketching class in the Breeze, and decided I wanted to try it. At that point, I had never drawn at all – not even stick figures. That was two years ago – what a terrific journey it's been since then! "I love going to Rob's class. I like sitting and working in a room full of other people like me who want to tap into their creative side, and who are very appreciative and encouraging of everyone's work. Rob is always able to make suggestions that help me refine my drawings in subtle ways. He helps me make sure I see the small details and nuances in the photos from which I draw my pictures. I started drawing with graphite pencils like everyone else in the class, but with Rob's encouragement, I have recently ventured out into other media, including colored pencils on black paper, which is my favorite. I am also trying ink, pastel pencils, watercolor pencils and watercolor paints. If you've ever wanted to explore your creative side but didn't know how to get started, I encourage you to come to Rob's class because it is a very friendly, easygoing and non-threatening way to get going on your artistic journey – trust me, I know!" ~ Micki Rosen We meet Mondays 10 am to 12 pm and Wednesday 6 to 8 pm.
