8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2015 DiD you know that aug. 11 is PresiDential Joke Day? It is not a day to make jokes about our presidents, but a day intended to prove that even our highest leaders have a sense of humor. On Aug. 11, 1984, President Ronald Reagan was doing a voice test before his regular Saturday radio address. Thinking that the feed and the microphone were not live, President Reagan joked with the words, "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you that I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes." Imagine his surprise and the consternation of his political leaders when it was discovered that he had a live feed! DiD you know that aug. 13 is left hanDer's Day? Finally a day for Southpaws – who put up with numerous inequalities. School desks are made for right handers; scissors are made for right handers. But lefties are fond of saying that "right handed people operate in the left side of the brain. Left handed people use the right side. Therefore, only left handed people are in their right mind." Only about 10 percent of the population is left handed and, according to the website Holiday Insights, many lefties use their right hands equally well. It just depends on the task. Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel DiD you know that aug. 22 is national tooth fairy Day? It is also celebrated on Feb. 28, probably because the world is full of children who routinely lose their baby teeth. If you have watched a small person having the baby teeth erupt, you know that the emergence of teeth is a painful process. If you remember, too, that having a loose tooth pulled is also a painful process. Tooth Fairy legend apparently dates back hundreds of years and offers consolation in the form of money or a gift if you put the tooth under the child's pillow. The tooth fairy comes after the child is asleep, an inducement to forget the temporary discomfort and look forward to a special surprise. DiD you know that aug. 26 is women's equality Day? Congress in 1971 designated this day to commemorate the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which declares that women have the right to vote and should be treated as equals to men. Although the 19th Amendment was actually passed on Aug. 26 in 1920, it took many years and much effort on the part of women's groups to achieve the recognition women deserve. The initial impetus for this movement was a World Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840 when a delegation of American women were refused attendance because of their sex. The Seneca Falls Convention of July, 1848, was publicized minimally, but brought out a large group of men and women. Property rights of women were addressed and gradually expanded. This is a fascinating part of our history. Spend a little time on the Internet and you will be amazed and grateful to the early fighters for equal participation with men in the various trades, professions and commerce. DiD you know that aug. 19 is national aviation Day? The specific day was chosen because it is the birthday of Orville Wright, the first person to actually fly an airplane. His first flight was at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on Dec. 17, 1903. Orville and his brother, Wilbur, changed the skies forever. Air transportation and travel has come a long way since then. Now we are considering a settlement on Mars and have already walked on the moon. Don't you wonder if any of those concepts occurred to the Wright Brothers?
