8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 2015 Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel did you knoW tHAt sept. 8 is pARdon dAy? It was established on Sept. 8, 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation pardoning President Richard Nixon of any wrong doing in the Watergate scandal. The day is also a day to remember the courtesies of saying "pardon me" or "excuse me" in our social lives when it is appropriate. (Make your parents proud for using the etiquette they taught you!) We also have a Global Forgiveness Day on Aug. 27 and an International Forgiveness Day, celebrated the first Sunday of August. The Global Forgiveness day began in 1994 and was created by the Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors, originating in Vancouver, British Columbia. The International Day was created by Robert W. Plath from Mill Valley, California. Holiday Insights, the website which talks about special days, notes that "there's enough trouble and strife in the world. Two forgiveness days can only make things better." Let's do our part, too! did you knoW tHAt sept. 3 is skyscRApeR dAy? The day is set aside to appreciate and admire the engineering and architectural marvels of our world. As space becomes more of a problem in urban areas, it is logical to build up instead of out. Fortunately technical capabilities have improved sufficiently to allow this. Although there is some technical disagreement about whether to include the height of flagpoles and antennas which top most tall buildings, there is no question that the world's tallest skyscraper is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It has 163 floors and measures 2,717 feet tall. The next tallest is the Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, China, which is only 2,073 feet tall and contains 121 floors. The third tallest is the Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which contains only 120 floors and is 1,971 feet tall. In a decreasing list of 24 tall buildings, our own Empire State Building, built in 1931, is the 24th. It has 102 floors and stands proudly at 1,250 feet tall. Why use the third of September as the special day? The answer is that Louis H. Sullivan who is credited with the first skyscrapers was born on Sept. 3 in 1856. did you knoW tHAt neWspApeR cARRieR dAy is celeBRAted on sept. 4? This is a day to commemorate all of the present and past newspaper carriers. The first newspaper carrier was hired on Sept. 10, 1833. His name was Barney Flaherty and he was 10 years old. Benjamin Day, who published The New York Sun, hired Barney to sell papers for his penny press. The job requirement was that Barney had to demonstrate that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes. Most carriers today are adults who are willing to work for low wages and can throw a newspaper into a yard from their cars, even if they have to get out occasionally and move it out of the shrubs. (There are days when looking for your morning paper is like going on an Easter egg hunt but once the carrier gets the community "plan" understood, delivery is more regular.) There is also an International Newspaper Carrier Day which is established by the Newspaper Association of America and is celebrated in October. did you knoW tHAt sept. 13 is foRtune cookie dAy? No, the research shows that the Fortune Cookie did not originate in China; it was actually created in California. The little slip of paper inside the cookie which supposedly brings you good luck or a philosophical thought was either invented by Makota Hagiwara at the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco in 1914 or created by David Jung, founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles in the 1920s. Either way, I hope your fortune is a good one.
