| sun lakes lifestyles | sePteMBeR 2015 | 33 If you haven't already signed your team up for the Fall Tournament, you're too late! Entries closed Aug. 28. The session begins with play on Sept. 8, a Tuesday. Keep in mind, Sept. 7 is Labor Day. Monday teams will play their first matches Sept. 14, making their season nine weeks long. Not to worry, a 'no play that day' is essentially a win when the final standings are figured out! The Bocce Club does a lot of communicating with members via e-mail. If you're fairly new to the club and have an e-mail address, but are not receiving them, it's probably because we don't have your address. We thought about e-mailing a plea for the addresses, but quickly realized that wouldn't work! Thus the plea in Lifestyles! If you are not receiving our memos, please do one of two things: either e-mail your address to friendsofbocce@dc.rr.com or jot it down on a piece of paper and either give it to Dutch or drop it in the little white box on the top shelf of the bocce cabinet. BTW, don't forget to identify yourself! Questions, call Dutch at 845-0392. She may or may not have the answers! See you on the courts! Friends of Bocce The sports that everyone can play for a lifetime! Pop Tennis, or Pickleball? What is NEW, HOT, and POPPIN? The answer is POP Tennis! Traditionally know as Paddle Tennis, our sport is now evolving to rebrand and clear up the confusion that many people have as it relates to the other racquet sports, i.e., Platform Tennis, Pickleball, Badminton, Ping Pong, Etc. As Pickleball's growth has been largely due to marketing, POP Tennis hopes to even exceed it's growth! In just the first few months since it's inception, much promotional publicity and marketing have reignited the interest in this sport. As it is played by individuals that span a far greater age range and is more tennis-compatible, the emphasis is to generate a new-found excitement for a game which was created over 100 years ago! The POP Tennis court is smaller than a tennis court, the racquet or paddle is shorter than a tennis racquet, and the ball is less lively. Additionally, the net is lower, and the players serve underhand — not overhand, as in tennis. All of these things make POP Tennis easy to play. The huge benefits for POP Tennis players are that the rallies are generally longer than those of tennis; there is more fun and exciting net play and (net) poaching; there is less court to cover; there are no overhead serves to learn; and as a result, there is far less running and wear and tear on the back, legs, feet, and shoulders. We hope this worldwide move to bring awareness and interest into this sport will trickle down to our tennis players here, or simply anyone who would like to come out and see what the game is all about. POP Tennis/Paddle Tennis is played Tues., Thurs., & Fri. at 7:30 am and Tues. & Thurs. evenings at 6 pm. Paddles are aways available for loan and for further information, please contact Wade Sampson (951) 846-3209. Pickleball is played Monday through Saturday at 7:30 am and new players will be provided paddles for loan as they check out this most popular, highly recommended, sport for seniors. Pop (paddle) Tennis & Pickleball Hey billiards players; do you enjoy the game of 8-Ball? If so, come on down to our Billiards Room any day except Sunday and practice with members of the 8-Ball Group. New players are more than welcome to join in. We usually arrive around noon and play until 2:30 pm or so. We 'pea' for partners and play to improve our 'game.' Competition is friendly, and helpful hints are common-place, as we're there to learn on those practice days. It's a bit more serious on tournament days. Every Thursday we host three matches here and one match at an away location nearby. While the competition is still friendly, there are no suggestions for improvement during these matches! If you want a more serious game, join a team and play in our tournaments. Cost is $15 for a three-month season. For more information, contact Steve Felber at 769-6898 or SNFELBER@yahoo. com.
