8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2015 Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel Did you know that Oct. 15 is White Cane Safety Day? The white cane is used by blind and visually impaired persons. The cane is not only usable for their maneuvering around obstacles but it has come to be a symbol of their independence. On Oct. 15, 1964, a joint resolution of Congress proclaimed this special day. President Lyndon Johnson immediately issued a proclamation declaring White Cane Safety Day every Oct. 15. Did you know that Oct. 17 is Wear Something Gaudy Day? This special day came from the 1970's television comedy, Three's Company." Richard Kline, who played Larry Dallas on the show, declared the day as a day for wild and wacky costumes, as far away from good taste as possible. The object is to stand out in a crowd! Go for it! Did you know that National Candy Corn Day is Oct. 30? The popular candy is featured in many ways around Halloween, so it is only fitting that a special day be given to it. I discovered that it was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger and was originally manufactured by the Wunderle Candy Company. Mass quantities were produced by the Goelitz Candy Company by the turn of the century. The ingredients in candy corn are fairly simple: corn syrup, honey and sugar. The hardest part would be coloring the distinctive white top and yellow stripe on the bottom of each piece of candy corn. Enjoy the treats and the day. Did you know that Oct. 1 is World Vegetarian Day? The day was first observed in 1977 although no special person is credited with the idea. Vegetarians vary in their commitments to specific foods, but basically they prefer to eat only vegetables and fruits, not killing any animals for consumption including fish and other forms of seafood. The day is designated as an opportunity to promote awareness of the healthy aspects of being a vegetarian and to call attention to the many ways of eating fruits and vegetables as a preferred lifestyle. If you are a meat and potatoes person, you might try to be a vegetarian for a day. Hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of ways plants can be made delicious. Did you know that Oct. 6 is Mad Hatter Day? The brainstorm of a computer group in Boulder, Colorado, Mad Hatter Day was first celebrated in l986. Obviously named for the fictional cartoon character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the day is intended as a special day to celebrate silliness. The Mad Hatter in the book wears a top hat with a piece of paper in the brim which says "10/6." According to the Holiday Insights website, this was probably an order to make the top hat at a cost of 10 shillings sixpence, not a designation of a specific date. Celebrate the day by adding a little silliness and fun in your life.
