It's Sun Lakers rushing to volunteer again for a great cause. In fact, this is really, really a great cause as it is helping our own residents. We are starting charity at home. The volunteers number some 30 members already and are looking for more. The name of the organization is "Sun Lakers Care." They will file with the Recreation Department to become an official group. With the application being approved by the Recreation Advisory Committee, it then will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for approval to operate in Sun Lakes. At a recent meeting the members elected the following officers: President, Suzanne Smith; Vice- President, Barry Sorensen; Secretary, Kris Hart; Publicity, Linda Vieira. Meetings have been held to define the mission of the organization and clarify the various works they will perform in our community. It appears that the following categories will be the action areas of the group: Transportation: They will transport residents to medical offices, banks, and other locations in Banning and Beaumont. There are many Sun Lakers who no longer can drive and need help in transacting their business. Meals: Shut-in residents or those who can no longer drive may order meals from our dining room or restaurants in the Banning and Beaumont area. The meals will be picked up and delivered to their home. Visitation: There are volunteers who will sit with shut-ins and play cards or games. They will also spell family members allowing them to take a break. Light Household Repairs: There are many repairs in the home that some elderly or infirm residents cannot do. Some of them include replacing light bulbs, replacing batteries in smoke alarms, resetting the sprinkler controls. The above is only a small list of help that can be given to our people. Of course, the volunteers will not do electrical or plumbing work or any other technical chores that require a professional. The organization will modify their agenda and tasks as they grow and become more knowledgeable as to what is needed in our community. Years ago the original builder, Presley, incorporated in their advertising campaign the slogan "It's The People." This is the best example of the caliber of people at Sun Lakes. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR THE EPAP COMMUNICATIONS UNIT For only two hours a month of your time, you can provide an invaluable service to our community through the Sun Lakes Emergency Preparedness Organization. The Communications Unit provides a reliable communications system in times of large scale disasters, local emergencies, and during the monthly communications tests. Communications inside Sun Lakes and with outside emergency agencies will still be available even though all electrical service is lost and all phone systems have failed. There are NO special qualifications or requirements to become a member of the EPAP communications team, only an interest and a desire to support your Emergency Preparedness Organization. In case of an emergency event continuing for an extended period of time, we need to provide radio communications on a 24/7 basis as long as needed. We will provide you with training on the equipment and operating procedures. The EPAP Communications Unit needs YOUR help to staff and support an effective emergency communications plan for our community. For more information please contact Dick Heitman, Communications Unit Director at (951) 769-1096 or email: dickheitman @gmail.com. EPAP ANIMAL RESCUE: Our next meeting will be Nov. 16 at 10 am in the Bus Room. Linda Vieira will be joining us with her guide dog Lainger. Lainger is a 6 month old guide dog puppy in training. Hope to see you there!
