27 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | November 2015 | From the President – Gerry Edmonds: The last quarter of the year is a busy time for the Golf Club. As I write this, we are between two major club tournaments, the recently completed Founders Cup and the soon to start Club Championship which will be completed at the time of publication. We have begun final preparations and ticket sales for our last banquet of the year and we are gearing up for the election of next year's club officers. In addition, membership renewal is beginning. All these activities just add to the run-up to the holiday bustle that seems to get started earlier each year. Election of club officers is held each year in November. Ballots will be available to all members beginning the first Tuesday of the month. Ballots may be turned in at the front desk of the Lodge on or before the third Tuesday. Results of the election will be announced the last Tuesday of the month. The newly elected officers will begin their term on Jan. 1. The Founders Banquet will be held on Sat., Nov. 7 in the Lodge Ballroom. Doors open at 4:30 and usual putting and chipping contests will begin shortly after. This year, our Social Committee Chairperson, Sue Mushallo has lined up live music for the evening featuring the band 8 Track. Last day to purchase tickets will be Oct. 31. This will be a great evening so purchase your tickets if you have not done so. This year's Founders Cup match play tournament was exciting with many very close matches. In the finals, D Flight winner Beau Day defeated Melody Lewis 3 and 2, C Flight winner Bill Carmody defeated Rob Jenkins 3 and 2, B Flight winner Dale Brockett defeated Doyle Braden 3 and 2, and A Flight winner Gerry Edmonds defeated Steve Wallace 1 up. Congratulations to all the participants for a job well done. Lastly, membership renewal is once again $63 per person and includes SCGA handicap. Members should renew their membership by Dec. 9. Golf has 34 rules with over 100 sections and subsections and over 2,000 explanatory decisions. The following are the most common two stroke penalties in stroke play. • Grounding Your Club in a Hazard: You may not ground your club in water hazards (yellow lines/stakes), lateral water hazards (red lines/stake) and bunkers. Striking the hazard through the act of impact is allowed without penalty. • Ball Striking the Flag Stick: It does not matter if the flagstick is in the hole or lying on the ground. If the flagstick is being attended and the person doesn't purposefully leave the flagstick in the hole, the two-stroke penalty would be given to the player making the stroke. If it were ruled the person attending the flagstick left it in on purpose, they would be given a two-stroke penalty for influencing the movement of the ball. Any stroke made from OFF the surface of the green i.e., fringe, rough, fairway or tee box, which hits the flagstick would receive NO penalty. • Ball Striking Another Ball on the Green: Take a two-stroke penalty if you play your ball from on the putting green and it hits another ball that is also on the putting green. • Playing a Wrong Ball: Know and mark your ball. Always identify and be sure you play your own ball otherwise hitting the wrong ball would result in a two-stroke penalty. • Carrying More Than 14 Clubs: There is a two-stroke penalty for each hole at which any breach occurred. The maximum penalty per round four strokes (two strokes at each of the first two holes where any breach occurred). • Playing From Outside the Teeing Area: If you play from the incorrect teeing area (from the blues instead of the whites on a hole) or outside the allowable teeing area on the correct tee box you will receive a two-stroke penalty AND be required to re-play your shot. The allowable teeing area is measured from the front and outside edges of the tee markers, up to two club lengths back. If you tee up your ball outside of this area the two- stroke penalty will apply. • Advice: Add two strokes to your score for the hole if you ask what club a fellow golfer used to hit his shot. Take a two-stroke penalty if you've addressed the ball to putt and you allow someone to point out the correct putting line. • Improving Your Lie: Take a two-stroke penalty if you improve the lie of the ball. If you play a ball in the rough you must do so without moving any branches or bushes – or using your body to bend or break any plants – or it's a two-stroke penalty. If you repair spike marks before you hole out your putt – it's a two- stroke penalty. You are allowed to repair ball marks –damage caused by a ball striking the green. • Hitting the Ball Twice: If a players club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the second stroke and add a penalty stroke. Two-stroke penalty on top of the original stroke played.
