FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2015 23 The residents of Four Seasons may suffer an interruption of water and sewer service after an earthquake. Refer to your Resident's Emergency Handbook that was mailed to you. New residents received the Handbook in their new resident packet. EPP will work to protect the health and safety of all of our residents at Four Seasons Beaumont. However, the homeowner is responsible to provide food, water and covered temporary toilets for use in their home. We must also bag our solid waste (trash) until it can be properly disposed. The minimum water usage is four gallons per person per day. Drinking and cooking one gallon; personal cleanliness one gallon; laundry and dish washing two gallons. We can survive temporarily with dirty clothes and unwashed dishes. Therefore, two gallons per person per day is the bare minimum. Additional water may be needed for dehydrated foods, personal hygiene and backfilling your toilet tank. You can store chlorinated tap water; store bought commercially bottled water, or the canned survivor water. When you first notice any dirt or turbidity you should shut off the water to your house to prevent further contamination. Shut-off valves are located on your front porch area or garage. You can then use chemically unaltered toilet tank water or water heater water for cleaning purposes. If your toilets are rendered useless by damage to your sewer main you must be prepared to use an emergency toilet. Do not plan on portable potties because we would need 130 of them. We may not be able to receive portable potties in our community. 1. Line your toilets with a plastic bag. 2. Use a camping toilet. 3. Use an emergency five-gallon toilet. Liners will be used and changed daily and the bags will be stored in your yard or trash cans until they can be properly disposed. With regular trash service interrupted we need a systematic way to handle our refuse. You should keep a 30-gallon empty trash container with liners available. If you do not already use trash bags you will need some. Your home will quickly become a rat trap without trash bags. Not all residents of Four Seasons will be forced to shelter in place. Those having a second home; a vacation rental or an RV may be able to utilize them; provided they can leave the general area. We, the Four Seasons residents, need to be prepared just in case we have no escape routes out of the area and need to shelter in place in our homes. ~ Mike Mendoza, Sanitation and Water Team Leader Emergency preparedness committee
