54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2015 | Henry Albertine, 92, passed away October 29, 2015. Henry was born October 26, 1923 in Pennsylvania. He was a resident of Sun Lakes for 25 years. Henry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the Submarine USS Cavalla and was the first President of the Sun Lakes Bocce Club. Henry is survived by his wife Ramona, his daughters Susan, Christine, Kathy and son Peter Henry, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Robert "Bob" Carpenter, Bob passed away on October 9, 2015, at his home in Sun Lakes. Bob's wife, Gloria, preceded him in death. The Carpenters moved to Sun Lakes (District 23) from Fountain Valley, California, in 2003. Bob enjoyed many activities, including golf. He was proud of his two Hole-In-One achievements on the Executive course. His bocce teammates will remember him as a competent and encouraging competitor. As he encountered health challenges, he continued to sub on various teams, making new friends along the way. Bob loved gardening and grew beautiful iris, roses, and begonias which he shared with his neighbors. He was a veteran of the Air Force and a patriot who flew the flag proudly. Bob will most be remembered for his cheerful nature, his infectious smile, and the great friend he became to many in the Sun Lakes Community. He is survived by his four daughters, four grandchildren, and a great grandchild. Noriko (Nikki) Corbett, an active, talented resident of Sun Lakes Country Club in Banning since 2003, died on October 22, 2015 following a long bout with cancer. She is survived by Joseph, her beloved husband of 60 years, three daughters, Nancy Navarro and her husband Danny, Jeane Salazar and her husband Jess, and Kathleen Shreve, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael in 1996. She is also survived by her sister Keiko Fujii of Banning and two brothers Tsunege and Ren Nakadate of Japan. Nikki was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1936 into a family descendant from 19th century samurai which endowed her with her competitive, talented spirit. Besides raising a wonderful family with husband Joe, she became a superb bowler and at one point carried a 185 average. When Joe switched to golf, she also took up the sport and was competent enough to score a hole-in-one. Then when faced with the physical impossibility of continuing to play golf, Nikki then joined the Sun Lakes Art League and proceeded to win 44 ribbons for her art works. Her samurai spirit allowed her to remain active through her lengthy battle with cancer. She will be missed by family and friends but certainly not forgotten. Services, Interment and a reception will be held on Friday, October 30th at 9 am at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Apple Valley, CA just a short distance from the famed cowboy Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Evans. RICHARD B. (BEN) HAMNER, son of John A. and Zilpha (Davis) Hamner passed away on November 3, 2015 at The Lakes in Banning, California. Ben was born on April 7, 1925 at home, on Magnolia Avenue and Tyler Street, in Riverside, California. Ben enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II at the age of 17. He attended the University of Missouri for Diesel Engineer training and later was assigned to the USS SC 1354, a submarine chaser. Ben was in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and was on duty at Times Square in New York when the Japanese surrendered. Ben married Viola Fredericks on April 4, 1953. They moved to Moreno Valley in 1956. Ben was Superintendent of the University of California Riverside Moreno Experimental Farm. After retiring, he became manager of the family owned Magnolia-Tyler Shopping Center in Riverside, California. Ben proudly served on the Riverside Grand Jury from 1978 to 1988. Ben and Vi moved to Sun Lakes Country Club in 1994 and then to The Lakes Retirement Facility in 2015. Ben was a member of the Beaumont Presbyterian Church. Ben is survived by his loving wife, Viola; sister Florence Sleeper of Phoenix, Arizona and 23 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Margaret Bird, Martha Drake, Rosemary Clayton and John D. Hamner.
