14 OUR YUCAIPA | JANUARY 2016
By Courtney Taylor
I was going to write a New Year's Resolution list but stopped
when I got to #4: Eat more fruit. Gag me with a banana, Courtney.
So I turned to Pinterest, my favorite site to visit when my brain
shuts down and I type "Eat more fruit" and clearly need inspiration.
As I was looking for resolutions to share, I found Memory Jars.
I'm familiar with the concept and even know some nearly perfect
families who have created them. But you don't need to be a Peters
to adopt this easy, positive tradition.
Step one: Get a jar.
Step two: Get a pad of paper and a pen.
Step three: Whenever anything little or big happens that
contributes to your joy, write it down, date it, fold the piece of paper
and put it in the jar.
You could put out different colored paper for each member of
the family and shame the person who isn't finding/sharing the joy
in their life, but that's something awful that
I would do (one of my resolutions is to be
less blood-thirsty). Better yet, give each
person their own jar and cheer each other
on. Whatever.
The point is to remember those
moments throughout the year that, when
added together, make for a pretty good
life. Then, at the end of the year when you
take out the pieces of paper and read them,
you'll realize that you have it pretty good
after all.
Even if you didn't eat more fruit.
