50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2016
When our hike date falls on Veterans' Day, we march. Not all of us
as some wave and clap at the marchers. Parade routes are gauntlets of
children holding flags, aging patriots cheering and veterans beneath
ball caps denoting their service: WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm,
Marines, Air Force, Army and Navy. Some bear witness to their unit.
Each salutes the passing veterans with mutual tribute to their service. It
is a rousing thank you, especially for the Vietnam-era veterans. It is an
all-American day.
Later in the month it was time to hike. Our group headed to Whitewater
Preserve and Trout Farm north of Palm Springs. This creek flows south
and east into the Coachella Valley. In the fall it is mostly dry but capable
of rising quickly when rains saturate the San Gorgonio Mountains. The
path is well worn and crisscrosses the creek as it winds gently uphill.
Our group is always conscious and reverses course in time to satisfy a
well earned appetite. For this hike it was Ruby's Diner in Morongo.
