FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2016 37 Counter Culture Cinema Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! We're planning to screen a great slate of films in 2016. Our first January screening, on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 6 pm, is the film Finding Vivian Maier (USA 2013, 83 minutes, English). Here is a brief description from Amazon.com: "Who is Vivian Maier? Now considered one of the 20th century's greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a mysterious nanny who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that went unseen during her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, amateur historian John Maloof has crusaded to put this prolific photographer in the history books. Maier's strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her." Our second January screening, on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 6 pm, is the film The Farewell Party (Israel 2014, 95 minutes, Hebrew with English subtitles). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "The Farewell Party is a compassionate dark comedy about friendship and knowing when to say goodbye. A group of friends at a Jerusalem retirement home build a machine for self-euthanasia in order to help their terminally ill friend. When rumors of the machine begin to spread, more and more people ask for their help, and the friends are faced with an emotional dilemma." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theatre has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Happy New Year AACC family. We hope everyone had a safe, healthy and happy holiday! As a reminder, if you are interested in holding a position for AACC in 2016, please write a brief note on what your interests and talents are and any other pertinent information you would like to share. Please submit your information to Betty Ann or Wanda Valentine no later than Jan. 31. Thank you to Betty Ann for a job well done at the holiday musical. Your explanation of Kwanzaa was great. The Kwanzaa celebration honors the African heritage in African American culture, and is observed from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. Kwanzaa has seven core principles. They are as follows: unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. It was created by Maulana Karenga in 1967. AACC will be hosting the Pageant of the Masters excursion. This event is open to everyone. You may sign up at the Lodge, there are only 50 seats available. For more information contact Betty Ann. The Christmas holiday party was a success. We enjoyed the music, food, dancing and fellowship of our neighbors and friends. A huge thank you goes out to the team that worked so hard to put this party together so beautifully for us. Our hats go off to Dee Houston, Wondell Collins, Betty Ann James, Priscilla Roble and Johnetta Driscoll. Roxie Elliott was unable to complete the Part II Boot Camp titled "Last Will and Testament, Trusts." Look for the flyers and reminders in the Lodge for the date and time in 2016. If you are interested in attending call Roxie at (951) 769-2517. A headcount is very important to ensure enough handouts for everyone in attendance. All family, friends and neighbors are invited. Our very own Cookie Bonner along with Cindy Graves will be hosting the Gospel Celebration in February which is open to everyone in our community. Look for upcoming information, flyers and other postings around the Lodge. If you are interested in being a part of this project please use the sign-up sheet in the Lodge. Contact Cookie at (951) 769-7679 for more information. Our family will continue to keep Wondell and her daughter lifted in prayer. Anyone interested in placing information in our Breeze article should contact me no later than the third of each month. If you have any comments, questions or concerns, contact Betty Ann James at (951) 572-5538. Happy New Year! "All my life I have had this almost criminal optimism. I didn't care what happened, the glass was always going to be half full." - Qunicy Jones. ~ Wanda Valentine African American Culture Club Upcoming multi-cultural evening of Christian and gospel music themed "Make a Joyful Noise," will be presented in the Lodge Ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 27 from 4 to 6 pm.
