32 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2016 Come join us at 9:30 am Tuesday, Feb. 9 when we will discuss Circling the Sun, by Paula McLain. Author of the bestseller, The Paris Wife, McLain returns with her new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Considered a star of historical fiction, McLain presents another beautifully written and powerful story of love and adventure. At the novel's center is Beryl Markham, the headstrong daughter of a British colonial who is more comfortable among the people and animals of her adopted Kenya then in the homes of its landed gentry. When Beryl's mother leaves the family and her father gives up the farm, she marries a gentleman farmer too disreputable and drunk to be much of a husband. Seeking more companionship from her horses, she becomes the first and greatest horse trainer in the region. Although Ms. Markham eventually becomes the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from east to west, McLain only gives us glimpses of that. Instead Beryl is noteworthy more as a complex woman who lives defiantly on her own terms. Readers will truly understand what made this woman "so far ahead of her time, believe(ing) she had the power to soar." With her sharp eye for detail and style, McLain captures the complex relationships and rigid social conventions of the 1920s and 1930s, along with the beautiful and breathtaking vistas of Africa. All are welcome, whether you come to share your ideas or just listen and see what book club is all about. The March selection is The Nightingale by Kristin Hanna. For further information, please contact Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Alex Woodcock Book Club The contest about "Your Most Memorable New Year's Eve" was a success, primarily for the high quality of the submissions. It made the task of the judges — Michael Rothberg, Sharon Bond and Roland Harrah — more difficult. They were given each text with a number instead of the name of author. Still, the judges felt that all the contestants should be proud of their submitted stories. The final result based on points was the following: First Place to Betty Vitatoe-Brooks Muhammad; Second Place, a tie, to Diane Bibeau and Pat Cummings; Third Place to Jean Lawrence. The official announcement of the winners was made at the last meeting of the Writers' Club. The next meeting is in the Lodge on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 pm. All residents are welcome to attend. ~ Joseph Laurin Party time: What can you do on a Saturday evening to meet with friends or make some new ones? I know what you can do on at least one Saturday night a month. Come down to the Lodge Ballroom after 5:30 pm on specified Saturdays, check the Breeze or call the Lodge front desk to verify which night is karaoke night. Yes karaoke night. I am proud to say we put on a heck of a show. This is not your bar room Karaoke, where a bunch of drunk guys get up and try to sing, OH NO. We have a group of pretty darn good singers who sing songs across many genres, some of which are bound to please your musical palate. Our last karaoke was a blast, for three hours from 5:30 pm to 8:30 we ate, drank, sang, danced, visited and laughed. If that ain't a party, I don't know what you'd call it. We invite you to join us on Saturday night Feb. 20 at 5:30 in the Ballroom, it's party time again! Oh, and did I mention it's FREE! (Just provide your own food and drinks) Oh ya, and you don't have to sing, but you're always invited to give it a shot. ~ John, Jerry and Dave "The Karaoke Herdsmen" Writers' Club Karaoke If you are interested in learning more about improving your photos on your computer and cell phone, there will be a special meeting on Feb. 9 at 10:30 am in the Ballroom. Joe Ligori and Irve Sturner will discuss the basics of digital cameras (DSLR), mirror-less, point and shoot and phone cameras. Admission is free and all residents of Four Seasons and guests are welcome. ~ Phil Jaffe Computer Technology
